Alan Colmes to Leave "Hannity & Colmes" After 12 Years

How Did He Last This Long?

Alan Colmes is leaving "Hannity & Colmes." The first reaction to this announcement, of course, would be: Why? The second would be: When? The third obvious question would be: What will become of the left-leaning Alan Colmes?

Alan Colmes has been the voice of reason (some say the only voice of reason) on the Fox News news commentary program "Hannity & Colmes" for the past 12 years. Sean Hannity, the ultra-conservative front half of the duo, will continue with the show, which

may or may not replace the departing Colmes. It is unclear if the show will take on the name of Hannity's popular talk radio show, "Hannity's America," but it has been suggested that the format of the television program will likely follow that of the radio show.

In a statement on Alan.com, Alan Colmes relates that earlier this year he approached Bill Shine, the network's senior vice president of programming, and told him he would like to "develop new and challenging ways to contribute to the growth of the network." The New York Times reports that Colmes is being kept on as a commentator and will develop a program to possibly take over a weekend slot.

He will leave the longest running prime time news program on Fox Network at the end of the year.

Colmes said, "Although it's bittersweet to leave one of the longest marriages on cable news, I'm proud that both Sean and I remained unharmed after sitting side by side, night after night for so many years."

It seems amazing that Alan Colmes can talk about his on-air partnership with Sean Hannity with such good humor, but, then, Colmes has always been the more controlled of the two. The jingoistic Hannity, although an extremely popular talk radio host, is known for his truculent and abrasive confrontational style. The mild-mannered Colmes has saved many interviews from ideological stalemate and tit-for-tat reactionary altercation over the years. In a now famous confrontation between Sean Hannity and the Reverend Jeremiah Wright (President-Elect Obama's former pastor), the interview devolved into an unproductive back-and-forth until Alan Colmes interceded and elicited a series of answers from Wright.

This is not an attack on conservatism, TDonovan. I have nothing against conservatism as an ideology. The article, however, is an attack on Sean Hannity's idiotic version of conservatism.

Saul, Thank goodness this is an opinion piece and not a real news story. I find it amusing though that ads for Newt and Coulter are juxtaposed with your attack on conservatism.

My husband and I watch Fox News Channel. We believe Colmes to keep the debate fair and balanced and we will miss him!

I stand corrected on the "Hannity's America," Anna, and appreciate your correction. I didn't fail to mention Sean Hannity's and Alan Colmes' freindship because I don't care that they are friends. I let their quotes speak for themselves. Friends or not, I'm sure Colmes is sick of hearing Hannity's attack-oriented b.s. Hannity's a self-serving pompous ass who wraps himself in the flag and damn the facts. That does not mean that he occasionally doesn't get a few things right. He's not a newsman or a journalist. He's a rabble-rouser. And a commentator. Put the two together and you have people like Hannity, Limbaugh, Coulter, etc.-- right-wing extremists who speak the jingo mantra of the disillusioned, the disenfranchised, the ill-informed, and willfully ignorant.

Sean's radio show is not called "Hannity's America' it is called The Sean Hannity Show. Hannity's America is actually a TV show that airs on Sundays on FOX. And also you fail to mention in your article that Sean and Alan are actualyl friends off the air that is a known fact validated by both Alan and Sean.

Talking points, The Moderate? When don't either liberal or conservative proponents issue one talking point after another? And there is nothing fair and balanced about Fox News organization. For every nutcase like Sean Hannity and Greta van Susteren, you have who to balance? Who on that network is a centrist? The closest would be Britt Hume and Shepherd Smith. After watching Fox News for years, there is not much about their news reporting that is fair and balanced.
