Just What is a Poppy Z. Brite Vampire Anyway?
A Journey into the Mind of Mr P
I have a confession to make before we begin; I have never read a Poppy Z. Brite book. I just never really came across his work in my browsing of bookstores or local libraries and so all my information is culled from reviews and synopses, if I have made any notable errors please feel free to correct me.Mr P is a self proclaimed writer and publisher of anthologies, in his latest submission call for one of those anthologies he writes:
"What will get you maimed by the editor (rejected, Any kind of vampire story where the vampire is of a Poppy Z. Brite type."
This is not the first time Mr P has made clear his disdain regarding the vampires that have appeared in her fiction, but just what is a Poppy Z. Brite vampire and why is Mr P so disgusted by them? That is what we shall attempt to answer here as we use his own words to take a brief voyage into the shallows of Mr P's mind. (I'm afraid we'll find no depths there so floatation devices are unnecessary.)
Let us start with the first question since it is the easiest to answer. From looking at synopses and reviews it is plain to see that Doc Brite writes about vampires whose thirst for life is as great as it is for blood. They accentuate their blood drinking with Babylonian feats of debauchery and indulge in liberal use of both alcohol and less legal stimulants, and it is from the former rather than the latter that Mr P's distaste is born I believe, though I suspect it is also tinged with professional jealousy.
Mr P regularly claims to be a Christian Conservative, though he apparently adopts only the most hateful of beliefs that hide behind that label, beliefs such as hatred of "the unnatural" homosexuals and transsexuals, and a disapproval of sex in general. You see in Doc Brite's works his vampires don't just hold to simple, monogamous, heterosexual couplings; they engage in as wide a range of sexual escapades as takes their fancy, something which apparently disgusts Mr P. Though the real question is whether that disgust is generated by the acts described, or by his reaction to them.
- All curse and hate words were censored at my decision, otherwise Mr P's words were not edited.
