Rich Mullins was many things to the contemporary Christian Music. To them he was a beloved performer nominated for 12 Dove Awards, an expert on several instruments (including hammered dulcimer, piano, and guitar) and a very successful songwriter. He is responsible for one of the most popular praise songs in existence, Awesome God. His musical legacy has continued in the ten years since his death. He left an indelible mark on the world of Christian music, but more than that, he touched my soul.

You see for those of us, who live in my hometown, Rich was more than a musician. Perhaps he could be called a melancholy genius. Gifted with a unique talent and a keen sense of humor, Richard Wayne Mullins traveled the steps of his life.

Always questioning.

Always learning.

Often philosophizing.

... and usually barefoot.

In order to honor his story, I'll have to dabble in some biographical notes. It's not my strong suit, because these are all just facts, and facts say little about the spirit of a person. So bear with me.

Born in 1955 in Indiana, he began playing piano at the age of four, gradually becoming proficient on guitar and dulcimer. In 1974, he began studying at Cincinnati Bible College, where he wrote praise songs and often performed on acoustic guitar. As part of Zion Ministries, Mullins toured the country and led praise & worship meetings at many retreats. During his time with this ministry, Rich penned a song called Sing Your Praise to the Lord, which was recorded by singer Amy Grant in 1982.
