I am a product of two decades of Catholic school. Grammar school. High School. College. Even law school. And I'm an atheist. Here are five reasons not to send your children to Catholic School.

Reason #1. From the time I hit third grade, I was told I was going to Hell. I remember raising my hand in Religion class and asking the priest, "Father, if I go to Confession and I'm absolved of my sins, how long does that absolution last? I mean, if I step outside the Church and into the street, and see a car about to hit me, and say a curse word like 'Shit' just before it strikes me and I die, am I going to Hell?" The priest gave my question little thought before answering with an emphatic "Yes."

Reason #2. Speaking of Religion class, what did it replace? Geography. After grammar school, I could recite for you verbatim Jesus' sermon on the mount, but I couldn't find Canada on a map if my life depended on it. And later in life, when you're the driver on a road trip to Montreal with your buddies, they could care less about the teachings of JC, especially when they're looking out the window, wondering why the hell you're traveling south.

Reason #3. And Religion class in Catholic school is, of course, about only one religion, Catholicism. Talk about breeding intolerance. Well, it doesn't take an advanced degree in logic to understand that if Confession is the only way to absolve your sins, and absolution of your sins is the only way to get into Heaven, well then anyone who doesn't go to Confession must be heading straight for Hell. Try explaining that to the six foot Jew on your pee-wee hockey team. Logic is, you'll walk away with at least one black eye.

Reason #4. Once you reach higher education in Catholic institutions, the self-righteousness hits hard. A lot of bullshit rules for bullshit reasons. "No members of the opposite sex in your dorm room after ten p.m." Because everyone knows sexual intercourse between a man and a woman can only take place after 10:01.

There are two sides to every story. For every person who had a bad experience in private school, there are two who have had great success stemming from a faith-based education. Some of you should do some research into modern Catholic schools...there are no more ruler yielding nuns...and overall, students and teachers are better off in a religious environment because everyone is continually able to examine their consciences...and confession is not taught as a cop-out. Students treat each other more kindly and generally treat adults with more respect when they are aware of their morals and values. Sorry to hear the author had a bad experience which turned him away...but with upmost confidence, I highly reccommend a faith based education....

I had the opposite experience. I learned my faith and I could find Canada on a map. Hope you find your way back.

I find all of these comments amazing. If this story had been about the muslim faith, well, who am I kidding - Catholics are the only faith in America that can be openly mocked and disrespected the way it is.

Hooray for writing this! I went to Catholic High School and was emphatic about sending my kid to public. Actually, I found this article because I was considering writing something similiar. I may still write it, even though AC probably won't by it. It's been 20+ years since I graduated and I still feel the need to vent! That's probably why the phrase "recovering Catholic" was coined. ;-)

Great read...I can relate. I survived nine years of catholic school in the 70's and remember figuring out the hypocrisy in second grade. I saw things done to children that I would never tolerate in my own children's school. (Ruler slaps, books being thrown on the floor, humiliation) Basically terrifying the kids into never stepping out of line or just being kids! Thanks for writing this.

Great article. Very funny. I could totally relate. I went to Catholic High School where everything is a sin and they wouldn't believe you if you didn't have anything to confess. Hehe. Bye

HA!! Hysterical... but no mention of the nuns cracking their rulers on the backs of your knuckles?? I'm guessing you probably blocked that memory out (along with a few others).
