Herbs taste best when they are fresh. Herbs can be fun to grow and a great hobby in the winter. You can feel like summer is just around the corner when you have herbs growing in your house in the winter. If you have a window that gets 5 hours of direct sunlight you can have an herb garden indoors. An herb garden growing indoors can provide you with fresh herbs even in the winter. An indoor herb garden can give you fresh herbs all year long and look pretty. You can grow all kinds of herbs indoors even such tender types like parsley, basil, and rosemary. Herbs can be fun to grow and you can start them indoors any time of year. You can grow as many herbs indoors as you have room for. Some herbs like lavender and chamomile have flowers and can beautify your home. Whether you live in the country or in the city you can plant an herb garden indoors. You can even grow herbs that you like to drink as tea like parsley or feverfew and have fresh herb tea when you want winter or summer.
Choose nice containers with good draining for your indoor herbs. You can use a mixture of four parts potting compost to one part sand. Or you can use three parts of loam to one part of sand and compost. Herbs can be set in individual 4 or 5 inch pots or grouped together in a large pot. Put the potted herbs into a window that gets at least five hours of direct sunlight a day or use a sun lamp to give the herbs at least five hors of sunlight a day.
Keep the herbs moist but not over watered for the best growth and you may need to turn the plants from time to time to avoid them growing toward the light source. If you put the potted herbs on a tray of one inch deep pebbles and add water to the pebbles it will help the herbs to stay moist and have proper drainage.
By having your own herb garden in the winter you can have fresh herbs all winter long and you can have pretty plants that provide oxygen to your house. If you want to plant the herbs outside come summer you can do that too. Or you could plant the herbs into a strawberry jar planter and put them out on your porch in the summer and bring them back inside for the winter.
