Michigan is a good place to work as a teacher, it is ranked 4th in the nation for average teacher salaries and the cost of living is low compared to those few states that pay higher salaries. Of course this means that competition is high for the best teachingIn order to teach in Michigan it is necessary to obtain a Michigan teaching certificate. The requirements include: completing the necessary educational requirements of the Michigan approved teacher education program; providing a recommendation from your college or university; passing the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification, which includes a Basic Skills test and Subject Area tests; and, completion first aid training and CPR for both children and adults.
If you were educated outside of the state of Michigan a credentials review is required, which will identify any gaps between your completed education and the standards for Michigan. If You are lacking any of the requirements you may be issued a Temporary Teacher Employment Authorization, which will allow you to teach while you complete the requirements for full authorization to teach in Michigan. This certificate is valid for one year and is non-renewable.
After completing the requirements for full authorization your Michigan Professional Certificate is valid for six years, after which you are required to complete 10 semester hours of professional development in a planned program at an approved teacher school. These programs are designed to keep your skills as a teacher up to date with the latest techniques.
