As a freelancer, I spend around 40 hours a week in front of the computer. With any other job I would be getting up and walking around three times a day, during my breaks. But, when you're a freelance writer, it's easy to forget about taking breaks. It's also easy to forget to take time to eat. While being a freelance writer can lead to weight issues there are still ways for freelance writers to stay healthy.

Ways for Freelance Writers to Stay Healthy #1: Schedule Time to Eat

As a freelance writer, I have the horrible habit of skipping meals in order to have more time to write. This is very unhealthy. As a freelance writer you should schedule time to eat. Also you should eat before sitting down to do your writing, especially if you work 8 hours a day.

Ways for Freelance Writers to Stay Healthy #2: Eat Slowly

When you do schedule time to eat, take the time to eat slowly. I know it's hard, as a freelance writer, to take the time and eat slowly, but if you don't you'll eat a lot more food than you actually should. You might also be tempted to choose foods that aren't very healthy, simply because they are convenient.

Ways for Freelance Writers to Stay Healthy #3: Eat Smaller Portions

As a freelance writer you may grab something from a fast food restaurant. If you do just be sure to choose foods that aren't way more than you should be eating. Some of the portion sizes at popular fast food restaurants are not healthy because they are big enough for 2 people.

Ways for Freelance Writers to Stay Healthy #4: Choose Better Snacks

Working in front of the computer leads to a habit that isn't very healthy and I'm sure I'm not the only freelance writer who does this. When you're in front of the computer you are often tempted to munch on snacks as you work. If you do this, be sure you are choosing healthy snacks and be sure you aren't eating constantly.

Ways for Freelance Writers to Stay Healthy #5: Do Desk Exercises

Freelance writers can stay really healthy by adding desk exercises into their routine. While these are a really healthy thing to do, they are really hard to explain. Please see the resource section for a link that will explain these exercises and also has pictures.

Great info! Personally, getting out up and going for a run around 2:00 or so not only gets my blood circulating but juices me up for another stint at the computer during the second half of the day!

Very good tips. I would also add to make sure to go to bed and get some sleep, which is sometimes hard to do when in the middle of an article.

Getting up and walking around is EXTREMELY important. I actually got a blood clot in one of my legs from putting in so many hours at the computer.
