Saving money usually means spending less money. Here are a few ways for Seniors to spend less and save more:Make a budget. Keep a record of your expenses, and plan on how much you have available to spend on a weekly basis. Take out just enough cash from your checking account to cover your planned weekly expenses. Whenever possible, leave your checkbook, ATM card, and credit cards at home that way you will not be tempted to spend more than you originally planned. If you have any cash left over at the end of the week, deposit that amount into your savings account.
Shop wisely. Have in mind what exactly you want to buy before you go shopping. Try to make a list of what items you want to buy and how much they will cost (don't forget to include taxes); then only take enough cash to cover that cost to prevent impulse buys.
To make sure you are getting the best deal, comparison shop. To comparison shop: look at the newspaper ads or junk mail you might receive, search websites online, inquire about prices by making phone calls to similar stores, or keep a notebook of the items you usually buy and their prices at various stores around town.
Be sure to consider more than simply the price of an item; the cheapest price is not always the best deal. Get the best deal by looking for items that list the price per pound, per ounce, or per piece. Also it might help to know that a lot of times items packaged in bags will be less expensive than items packaged in boxes. And, sometimes, stores also place the cheaper items in less convenient locations, such as closer to the bottom or top of the shelf (if you cannot reach it, be sure to ask an employee for help) or in the back of the stores.
Consider buying store brands or generic brands. Often they are just as good, only less expensive.
And, if you use a certain product a lot, such as toilet paper or vitamins, consider buying those items in bulk. Bulk items cost more upfront, but usually are a better value so you save money in the long run. However, do not buy something that you do not actually think you will use just for the sake of getting more for your money.
