It happened again and it's not okay. As I approached the red traffic signal at the main intersection of my suburban community yesterday morning with my two-year-old in the back seat I saw oldish looking men whose faces were obscured by hoods holding five-foot high posters of aborted fetuses. I could feel my usually normal blood pressure rising and my head began to throb. I kept glancing at my small son in the back seat as he concentrated on spraying his juice out of his sippy cup and onto his new car seat. Juice spraying isn't an activity I normally encourage, but I was glad it kept him from looking out the window.

The sight of these ragged would-be children has always filled me with a sense of sadness that something like that could happen, which I am sure is the intent. It has also always filled me with a sense of rage.

My rage isn't directed toward the source these men (it's always older men, isn't it? I wonder why) surely hope it will be, but at the men themselves and whoever the phantom organization is to whom they belong.

I say phantom organization because there is no way to tell other than to stop one's car and ask. I didn't want to stop yesterday to draw my toddler's attention to these macabre raggedy children. Besides, I witnessed an incident a few years back when a passerby did just that and was cursed at and told that the demonstrator was the Right Hand of God. I couldn't find evidence of such an organization so I imagine his claim, much like his poster, was over the top. I called the municipality to see if someone had a permit to demonstrate on that corner, but they didn't.

These nameless, faceless people have a right to voice their opinions. I understand that. As one who puts bread on the table by way of the First Amendment, I even appreciate it. My argument isn't with their message. They could say anything-I mean anything-I would support their right to do so; however, their method of delivery is damaging and ineffective.

Dan, thanks for your comments. I agree that these demonstrators, although they might argue the point, weren't supporting or defending God. Again, though, I am a strong supporter of free speech. I would defend their right to hold signs that say anything, but that particular type of image does harm to their cause and all those who view it. I would like to see someone in that organization realize it's a bad idea and just stop. I also want to briefly comment on the sensitivity issue. I think our culture has lost too much of its sensitivity. This summer I was downtown waiting for a bus and no less than 5 box trucks with Raggedy Ann on the side passed the bus stop. I looked around to see how it affected those around me. I was saddened to see that it didn't affect them at all.

I enjoyed your expose. You are very tuned in if not a bit more sensitive than is best for you. I always feel that I want to apologize for the serially stupid. Those people are everywhere and they do not support or defend God, ofcourse. What they do is advertise for the results of life in the absence of God. Pray for their ignorance and state of selfishness to be washed off and keep on doing the next right thing. You don't have to look around much anymore before you realize we are in some wierd times. You are right though, sometimes I can't tell the good in between the preachers of the evil and the evil of the preachers. Good Job!!
