In downtown Harrisburg today, Governor Edward G. Rendell was sworn in to a second term at the Pennsylvania State Capitol. He currently serves as governor and oversees a $25 billion budget for the 6th largest state in the country. In his first term, Governor Rendell witnessed a lot of progress state-wide. According to the official governor's website, "Pennsylvania now ranks 15th in the nation for job growth, up from 41st just four years ago." There are 120,000 more Pennsylvanians working than there were when Governor Rendell took office.
He is also responsible for improvements in education, and public schools have enough resources and support to initiate kindergarten and tutoring efforts.
Recently, Governor Rendell has invested $2.2 million to help improve public health and utility service within the state's municipalities. He stated, "Upgrading Pennsylvania's drinking and wastewater facilities is an essential step toward protecting our residents and attracting new business to the commonwealth."
In a press release dated January 12, 2007, Governor Rendell is quoted as saying, "We've made solid progress in rebuilding the state's economy by cutting business taxes and making the investments necessary to improve our infrastructure, educate our workforce, and help our companies grow."
Because of the large success he had in his first term, hopes are high for Governor Rendell these next four years, as he continues his career as Pennsylvania's 45th governor.
In his speech which took place at noon today, Governor Rendell placed an emphasis on justice and equality for the public and government alike. He proposed to make health care more affordable to nearly one million citizens and announced his agreement with the voters, who have displayed their belief that the political process needs reform.
To implement this reform, Governor Rendell mentioned the addition of an open records law to allow voters to learn in-depth information as to the history of political candidates. Along the same lines, he proposed to set limits on campaign contribution in an effort to level the playing field.
