OK, "24" is back-the two night season premiere was shown on January 14th and 15th. Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) the long-suffering and do whatever it takes counter terrorism guy, is back to save us all from the black
 knight of terrorism again.

For anyone who might be unfamiliar with the show, each season (this is number 6) is supposed to be a day in the life of Bauer and those around him as they tackle terrorism. I watched (and liked) the first season. Since then, I have only caught the sporadic episode. I haven't found anything in the show worthy of my interest and don't see that changing with season 6. And even more, I find that some of the elements in season 6 are quite troubling. If a person is to believe the story line, then some troubling assumptions must be made.

The only good intel comes from torture. Seems like all the intel gathered through traditional means is tainted, misleading, or just plain wrong. It takes Jack or someone else getting really nasty for any good information to come out. Not only wrong, but dangerously misleading. Was Cheney a story consultant?

There are no Muslims that can be trusted. It seems that even the "good Muslims" can be bad and even the ones that are good are only self-motivated and tainted. And if you trust a Muslim, you risk the future of America. And when the show highlights the ugly side of vigilante redneck racism, it does it tongue-in cheek. A white family befriends Muslim neighbors and defend them in the face of vigilantes out to hurt them. Turns out, the redneck was right, the kid next door was a terrorist. And the family that defended them is made to look like stooges.

We must give up rights. Characters on the show who take positions that support Constitutional rights are portrayed as hindering the mighty Bauer and friends who only live to keep us safe. And speaking of Jack Bauer-how many times must he save us all before we believe him? In the season opener the President doesn't listen to Jack, and of course he should have.

  • This is the sixth "day" of the series "24"
  • Jack Bauer needs to take a day (or season) off
  • "24" leads the viewer to think that the only good way to get intel is to torture.

never hits traffic never hits a red lite came from the ocean walked to his girlfriend's home from the ocean and attempted to use a gun that was salt water soaked and pops up after brutal beatings an "takes a lickin an keeps on ticking"?
I love this show, but I have to agree sometimes I feel like its a little much. I fell in love with the first season I saw becasue it was new and radical to me, but know as I watch others I see that they're all very similar. Don't get me wrong, I still love the show and I'll watch, I'm just suffering from the sequel effect - you probably know what I mean. You're right it is over the top but its entertainment and sometimes for entertainment to work we have to let go of reality a little bit.
I've never seen the show so I'm unqualified to comment regarding that. However, the article is well written and you raise some interesting questions for debate. I see that as a good thing!
I think you might want to watch another full season before you jump to conclusions. Yes, torture is used quite frequently in the show, however it doesn't always provide information. It's usually only when some emotional attachment that the torture-victim has is threatened that they give anything up. As for the "can't trust any Muslim" thing, this season seems to be dealing with that with the al-Asaad character. The only person that trusts him from the start is Jack, likely because he's the only one with first-hand knowledge that al-Asaad has given up terrorism and is trying to broker peace through diplomatic means. One of the best moments was in this week's episode when al-Asaad shows up at CTU and offers his hand to Bill Buchanan, but is denied. Then, near the end of the episode, when Bill finally realizes this guy is for real, he offers his hand to al-Asaad. Finally, with the constitutional/civil-rights part, that too seems to be a major point in this season. The Secretary of S
Yes... take a break by all means... we wouldn't want the American people to be alerted to very real possible dangers. Liberals dominate just about every TV program, with snide comments about Bush, Republicans in general, and Christians. But let someone put out a story that does not support liberal thinking and people like you howl. Pathetic and childish. Time to grow up Jeff.
Thank you. "24" is a show that glorifies values not consistent with the United States at its best. But it still is a fictional program. I personally find it offensive and silly, but I thought the A-Team was also not worthy of an audience. Shut the darn thing off -- and it'll go away.
Okay, okay, so the show's getting a TAD unrealistic . . . (understatement of the year) I still love it, though. Although, with the beginning of this season, I found myself almost as depressed and worn out as Jack himself . . . scenes of torture, a nuclear bomb explosion, the killing of a beloved character for an almost too cliche and pointless quest for revenge, etc. . . . it took a lot out of me watching those first four hours . . . but I can't imagine I'll just give up on it.
Also keep in mind that the show is always based upon the "ticking time bomb" scenario.
Jeff, I have had a problem with the whole torture aspect of 24 since its first season. This season so far has me a bit more upset however, due to some of the things you have pointed out in the article, especially the redneck vigilantism thing, the impression that no muslim can be trusted and the overall impression that we must surrender some rights. However, there is a counterbalancing message in each season which shows the other side of the coin, but you need to watch a full season to pick up on it. Sutherland supposedly has liberal leanings, while other producers are reportedly somewhat conservative. But as Shanika said, I can't help but love teh suspense and action of this show.
But how we love overblown entertainment. 24 has an exact formula that they use in every season. Which is annoying for sure. On top of that, each year it becomes harder and harder to remain patriotic. I find myself gritting my teeth at the ridiculous injustices masked as patriotism and wonder if anyone else notices. However, I stay for the fantastic action.
