Ahh, Schlock Mercenary, how I love you. Let me count the ways. Maybe it's because this is one of the very first webcomics (if not the first, I can't recall) that I began reading, and became hooked on. I've been reading it for about nine months now, at best guess. I've read my share of webcomics and let me tell you, this one is worth the read.
Could my love be because of the amorphous glob of alien goo named Schlock? That adorable trigger happy mercenary? Yes, of course that is one reason.
Could it be the rest of the Tagon's Toughs the coolest space merc group around? Oh, certainly, nothing is better then seeing mad scientists, aliens, and humans get along so well. Yes, I put the mad scientist in his own category, too smart to be any ol' human.
Could it be that one of the biggest enemy alien races the mercenary's encounter look like koala bears. Yes, yes, yes!
It's all those reasons and more!
Schlock Mercenary
This webcomic (comic strip that is based on the web) is a space opera of huge and hilarious proportions. It like all the rest has gone through some serious changes, artistic and otherwise. Yet, from the very beginning it is engrossing and wonderful.
Set in the future in a Star Trekian sort of universe, that is if Kirk were a bad-ass mercenary, Spock a mad scientist and Bones were a blob of gun-toting alien with a thing for Ovalqwik (a chocolate drink powder). This future is full of aliens, but this universe doesn't insist on every one of them having a human-like appearance about them.
The mercenary Captain is a human named Tagon and he is out to make some money. A follower of "Seven Habits of highly Effective Pirates" apparently a guide with a host of fun rules including Rule One: Pillage then Burn. His crew changes over the course of the strip (usually when his ship changes), though one of the constants is Schlock the very lovable and very squishy alien on whom the very first strips of the web comic were focused.
