Crossroads of America, a Secret in Central Illinois

Not too far from St. Louis, Chicago or Indianapolis, Effingham, IL is a romantic getaway that is far enough from the big city with plenty to do. The town's slogan is "Crossroads of America" and is where Interstates 57 and 70 join together and is known for a 198-foot cross shining bright as travelers enter from the west. The first of many sites to see in the area, The Cross at the Crossroads (www.crossusa.org), stands 19 stories tall and is located just off exit 159. Over 50,000 people view the Cross daily. There is also a Chapel Welcome Center.
However, that is not all there is in Effingham. Effingham also features the Sculptures of the Avenues, a self guided walking tour. This is the eighth annual exhibition of the sculptures and features work by some of the Midwest's best known sculptors. The tour is over a six block area in the heart of town and features 31 different statues to see. Included are the Flame of Hope, Wild Dance, Heart of Gold, Firestone Necklace, Urban Cactus, The Whirlwind is in the Thorn Tree and concludes with Day Blind Stars.
Two events occurring in the month of February worth noting are at the Keller Convention Center (www.kellerconventioncenter.com). The first event is February 3-4 is the annual Effingham Homebuilders Show and the second is the Country Treasures Craft and Folk Art Show, taking place from February 23-25.
If you come and spend a weekend, there are over 20 hotels in Effingham that are available to get a good night's sleep. One hotel that is offering a Valentine's night special is the Rodeway Inn. If you spend the night in one of their jacuzzi filled rooms, you can get the night's stay and a romantic dinner at the Lonestar, all for $99.
There is also fine dining with great atmosphere. Two places that you may want to make your reservations at are Thelma's Great American Grill at the Hilton Garden Inn (www.hilton.com) and Rexroat's Distinctive Dining (www.rexroatsdining.com).
