You know the commercial, gotta go, gotta go, gotta go right now. That's how it feels for someone who has an overactive bladder. The have to go to the bathroom very frequently or it becomes uncomfortable to say the least. What are the signs of an overactive bladder? Well the first and most obvious is the need to urinate often. For many it means as much as several times an hour while other's with an overactive bladder go 10-12 times a day. That amount is still more than the average of 6-8 times a day and can be a frustrating part of life. Generally those with this problem will need to get up at least once during the middle of the night to use the bathroom. Some may get up several times a night. Interruption of sleep is just one annoying side effect of bladder problems.
Sometimes the need to urinate frequently is due to a UTI which is a urinary tract infection. Some of the symptoms are similar to an overactive bladder except that with a UTI pain is often reported and luckily an infection can be treated and symptoms disappear.
Occasionally, but not always people, who have an overactive bladder also have urinary leakage. This may be a result of having to use the bathroom so often that they end up holding it and may have weaker bladder control muscles. Drinking less fluids, especially soda and coffee may help with this problem but it can be one of the most frustrating aspects of an overactive bladder.
Having to take time to find a bathroom frequently can put a damper on a night out or a family vacation. Also those who suffer from this condition tend to miss out on other things such as the best part of a movie or a few minutes of an important meeting at work because they simply cannot wait to relieve themselves. It is also very distracting overall, the discomfort you feel when waiting in line somewhere or having a conversation is very annoying and can cause your whole body to tense up, which equals more stress.
