Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, the oldest and most prestigious of the four African American sororities, celebrated what is known as Founders Day this past Monday, January 15th. Founders Day commemorates January 15, 1908, the founding date of the sorority almost one hundred years ago. Founders Day not only honors the sorority's founding date but it honors the founders and the women that ensured the existence and continuation of the sorority.

Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded on Howard University's campus in Minor Hall on January 15, 1908 in Washington, DC. Nine women joined together to start an organization that was the first of its kind, the first sorority founded by African American women. Since its inception the sorority has directed its aims toward cultivating and encouraging high scholastic and ethical standard, promoting unity and friendship among women, addressing the problems concerning girls and women, maintaining a continued interest in college life, and being in service to all of mankind.

In its 99 year history Alpha Kappa Alpha has provided millions of service hours to the world community. Through programs for young women and reading and math tutorials this society has cultivated generations of well rounded individuals. Its presence on college campuses have given birth to unique and informative activities, seminars, and events that highlight topics such as health, the arts, and African American families and economic concerns.

Alpha Kappa Alpha has over 180,000 members and Founders Day is revered by each member. The sorority's members are spread across the country and around the world and its undergraduate and graduate chapters have their own individual chapter charter dates. However, Founders Day is the one day celebrated by all.

Justsaying, you are incorrect on everything. Jada, Ms. King and Ms. Parks are all honorary. Again, if you are not a member please do not answer questions on behalf of AKA.

Jada Pinkett Smith, Coretta Scott King, and Rosa Parks are in FACT honorary members. This information is verifiable.

Soror Alicia Keys along with all other honorary members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. have made outstanding achievements that set them apart in their communities and careers. Soror Alicia was not bestowed her honor only because of her Grammy's; by the way, how many Grammy's do you have? Soror Alicia is very active in the community and has been a strong advocate for children in third world country's who have been afflicted with the AIDs virus. Thus, please do your research before assuming you know what you are talking about. Honorary membership is the highest honor and she along with all other honorary members are most deserving. As far as the "paper" and "pledging" issue; it's not of concern to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and those who embrace it are immature and close minded. I cannot speak for other organizations but AKA does not embrace or acknowledge such foolishness and has always/and will always be about Service to all Mankind" as well as persevering the integrity

(Continued)a member and I do have a college degree; I refuse to go paper and I had no time in school to submit. It broke my heart when I saw that Alicia Keyes was made an honorary member just because she won some Grammy's and I work hard in my community everyday and look up to those women and it's not like I can go around saying "LOOK AT ME...I WANNA BE AN HONORARY MEMBER" lol...I'll get blacklisted! So what do local celebrities do??????

All of them you listed are "Honorary" members of the sorority! Honorary membership is the highest membership one can acquire when apart of Alpha Kappa Alpha Inc.. I feel there is a difference between going paper and becoming an honorary member. You're being hand picked by the organization for membership and the other you just have to meet the minimum qualifications and you may be approved. I don't think having honorary membership is a negative thing, DEPENDING on who and why they are selecting them for membership. Such as Alicia Keyes...I didn't think that was right at all because what has she really done other than win some Grammy's???? And she wasn't even in the Industry long before they accepted her. I don't see where that lines up with anything they represent. There are so many women that do things that DO line up with what AKA considers membership quality...where is their "Honorary membership"? I have the utmost respect for AKA and I cannot say I have the pleasure of being

I don't understand why AKA will acknowledge honorary members, but so many Black Greek Organizations will not honor paper members. Neither one pledged. Isn't Rosa Parks or Coretta Scott King an honorary member, or is it Jada Pinkett-Smith? Just curious.
