Teen Disorder Called Self-Embedding What is This Disorder and What Are the Signs

Self-Embedding Disorder Can Lead to Death

New Teen Disorder called Self-Embedding. I know teens go through a pretty stress time just like anyone of us, but come on inserting objects into their body like needles, staples, glass, crayons, paper clips and nails. I thought the
Anorexia and Bulimia trend with teens over the past few years was bad enough. Now teens feel they have to use self-mutilation as another form of suicide? Many people might have never heard about Self-Embedding, but this disorder has been around for some time now, but is definitely creating a higher popularity within the past few months. Last year I had a neighbor of mine end up trying to commit suicide by cutting her arms, and ingesting a bottle of Cough medicine. She ended up going to the hospital come to find out she had a crayon imbedded in her feet. The question I had when I first heard this was" How the heck do you get a crayon embedded into your foot"? From what my neighbor told me the girl first cut her foot slightly opened then shoved the crayon as far as it would go into her foot.

Of course the girl ended up being admitted into UMDNJ located in New Jersey. What causes a teen to even think about Self-Embedding? Some teens may feel it's a way to deal with stress or should I say cope with their problems and crazy as it sounds some enjoy the comfort of Self-Embedding. How can inserting objects into any part of your body be comfort to you? I know when a needle is inserted into me to take blood I get all tensed up, and don't enjoy the pain. Some signs of self-injury or self-mutilations to me would be cutting yourself, swallowing toxic chemicals or objects like batteries, deliberately burning yourself with cigarettes or some sort of burning ignition, and another sign I feel can be a problem for self-mutilation is pulling out your hair. Did you know pulling out your hair is a Compulsive disorder just like an eating and gambling disorder? Hair pulling though I feel can definitely lead to self-Embedding for the simple fact of the enjoyment of pain some feel.

Wow, this is something new for me, I have never heard of anything like this. Parents really need to pay more attention to their children. I think that neighbors and family friends might not see the signs, but parents need to be more tuned into their children, most who are sick give their parents hints and signs and are just waiting for a response.

Well isn't this a subject! Nothing like burning flesh I'll never forget that smell. This disorder is a hard and painful thing to understand or watch even to smell and know!

First of all, it's not a trend, it's a mental illness and we do it as a way to cope with emotions that are too difficult to express in any other way. We are niot crazy, and it is very insulting to say so. Would you call someone crazy for being sick with cancer? Nicole

I have heard of cutting, and hair pulling, but had not heard of embedding objects. This is very sad, and frightening!

This is a rampant problem I see from our involvement in high school and even middle school. Highly linked to self esteem and often feelings of guilt, self worth, etc. Thank you for addressing the issue.

A lot of this could be prevented by a good upbringing. Love and support from parents needs to start in infancy. Parents should respond to EVERY cry of their babies rather than ignoring them sometimes thinking they will become spoiled. When a child has a problem in early childhood, parents should listen and spend time talking to them rather than saying they don't have time or not right now. Little things like this could lead to blocked communication and problems later on. Thankfully, my parents were pretty supportive, and I felt loved and did not feel the need to resort to hurting myself. Sadly though, many teens are misguided, and a lot of it comes from things parents do. Well done. Good job. I gave you a five for this one!
