My husband often teases me for belonging to so many online message boards or forums. He isn't quite sure just what to make of my "friendships" that I have developed with some women over the course of several years and months. He wonders just what it is about online forums that make so many people flock to them throughout the day?

Let's think about that. To me, the answer to why online community forums are so popular is because you join them for a specific reason. They are a place where common interests are shared. Because let's face it, not too many people are going to participate or search for an online community of which they have absolutely no interest in. If you aren't into digital cameras then most likely you won't be joining an online digital camera community would you?

What are your reasons for joining an online community forum? There are so many available that you can pretty much find any of your interests or hobbies online in the form of a community message board. Many pregnant women and mom's are interested in bonding with other women who either have children the same age as her children, or who are pregnant and expecting around the same time as them. There are forums exclusively for moms and pregnant moms. One such forum is called Babycenter. Many women, and some men, join this online community to get tips and advice from others who are in the same place as they are in relation to being a mom or a dad. Joining a group of other mothers is a great way to vent, share, and sometimes, even cry over the joys and trials of being a parent.

Takeaways
  • People join online communities to bond with others.
  • People join online communities because of like interests.

I agree. I'm a part of a few communities that share a passion I have about something and I'm there to get questions answered, and to help others. I'm not there in search of "friendships" but sometimes that happens.

Fantastic article! I've belonged to several online communities for many years, and my husband always wondered why. I'm going to send him a link to this article.

I recently started to post on forums. Its very interesting how many people are willing to help when you need technicial advice or any type of advice in general. Its better than television. Great Article! Maybe it would be interesting to track how many men and women join forums.

Your article is so true! Before internet we all sat alone with some of our hobbies were not exactly popular in our area or amongst our friends that lives around us. Now with the internet we have on line role playing games, where we can submerse ourselves into the game with our friends that could be all the way across the Atlantic ocean or someone that is in another state. It is great to share opinions and advise with someone that doesn't exactly completely know you and can not use what you are saying against you. Its is like talking to an interactive diary in some ways.

Good article, good points. The first forum I ever joined was years ago at the Weight Watcher's site and it helped me stay on track by sharing tips, small triumph and setbacks with others going through the same thing..from there I moved on to many other forums pertaining to my varied interests and I love them all.

I really never understood the appeal until I joined AC. Now I feel like some of the CP's are my "internet friends". :-)

This is so true! Since I am a writer and aspire to one full-time one day, I've joined a number of sites that I visit regularly. They truly help me share with other writers and get feedback on my work and what I'm doing right or wrong. AC is also a great community to be a part of!

Nice article - well written and informative. Forums are a great place to obtain niche info and meet interesting people. Nearly all of my friends and business associates are people I met through online forums. I think as writer's and stay-at-home mom's we tend to be somewhat isolated. Forums give us a place to reconnect with humans, even if it is only through keystrokes.

Nicely written piece. I have definitely been blessed to meet many wonderful women through online message boards. As a stay at home mom, this link to the outside world has been really helpful for me especially.
