Looking to make it a date night? I’ve also included restaurant recommendations for some of my favorite restaurants that are right near each of the theaters.
Local Films
The Patterson
3134 Eastern Avenue
Baltimore, MD 21224
Phone: 410-267-1651
Website: www.creativealliance.org
The Patterson is the place to go if you’re looking for regional and local films. The Creative Alliance MovieMakers (CAmm) Salon is held on the first Monday of each month, and is a forum for local movie makers to showcase their new work and obtain critiques and suggestions from the audience. The Salon is free, so get there early because it is known to fill up. Throughout the month, they also screen documentaries and film series, though these usually cost about $8. Get there early to enjoy the art gallery outside the theater, which showcases the work of local artists.
Dinner and a Movie: Try Matthew’s Pizza, voted as some of Baltimore’s best by Baltimore Magazine. I recommend the crab and Old Bay pizza.
Independent/Classic/Foreign Films
The Charles
1711 N. Charles Street
Baltimore, MD 21201
Phone: 410-727-3464
Website: www.thecharles.com
Matinees: $6; Evenings: $8
The Charles is a Baltimore treasure. They screen independent, classic, and foreign films as well as the occasional Hollywood movie. Such an eclectic mix is welcome; they’ve been known to screen classics such as King Kong right next to documentaries such as Supersize Me and foreign films such as La Mala Educacion. The building is structurally beautiful, with lots of exposed brick, though the seating in some of the theaters is somewhat cramped. However, that shouldn’t stop you from trying it out, as this is the only place in Baltimore to see many of these films.
