As parents across the United States work aggressively to raise children into productive adults, there is an increasingly number who find frustrating and stress when faced with a child suffering from a psychological mood disorder, such as depression. Most often, it is during the teenage years that parents begin to notice depression more paramount in a child than what may have been seen in younger ages. For parents, understanding what teen depression is how teen depression is diagnosed and the treatment options for teen depression will ensure a more pleasant and stress free transition through this crucial period in a child's life.

Teen depression is often characterized by, internally, by feelings of intense sadness and hopelessness. Outwardly, the teen suffering from depression will exhibit symptoms ranging from anger to boredom, often attempting to isolate into a bedroom or away from social groups. While depression in teens is, at times, normal, it is when the teen's depression interferes with activities of daily living that parents should take notice and seek out the appropriate diagnostic and, if needed, treatment options for the teen depression.

Unfortunately, many teenagers suffering from depression and related mood disorders are undiagnosed until such time as a negative affect arises. Such issues may involve truancy from school, missed homework assignments, disciplinary issues and a general lack of social networks within the educational and home environment. For parents, these negative issues often result in guidance and counseling with a healthcare professional who, in turn, may recommend testing to determine what, if any, mood disorders the teenager may be experiencing. Testing for an adolescent mood disorder may be verbal or written or may simply be through observation by a child psychologist.
