There are plenty of pre-parenting classes that expectant parents are always offered. Many of us often make jokes about how no one ever prepared you for the many things that come along with taking care of a new baby, or even a toddler or teenager. Of course there are plenty of classes they will teach you different techniques to care for your newborn. However when it comes to being able to communicate with your child as they get older there is no such thing. Many parents tend to base their decisions on what they were taught as a child. For others they combine what they were taught as a child with their current religious beliefs.

No parent really needs a class to teach them how to be a parent. If you wait until you have passed their years of puberty and have your children when you are in a secure relationship, and are mature enough to care for your baby you will definitely have a lot less problems to worry about. This is not to say that you will never have any problems at all as a parent. We all face various obstacles, but you will be instinctively able to handle any situation. I personally believe that we were all created with the natural instinct to love and care for our children.

Many of us naturally tend to figure things out as we grow. There are also plenty of books out their for parents that are written by other parents. I have also found some of these books to be very interesting, especially during the infant and toddler years. You can also learn a lot from talking to other parents in your area, and enlisting the help of your own mother. When it comes to the question of whether or not a parenting class will be able to prepare you to be a parent, there really could never be such a class.

I could confidently say the parenting classes I took were a waste of time. The nurse insisted our babies should sleep in separate rooms, etc. Most of the suggestions given I felt were part of an inhumane approach to parenting and wouldn't mesh well with our lifestyle and parenting style.

I don't think classes can really prepare you so much as maybe give you ideas. Every child is so different, sometimes you're stuck thinking, "But the book said....why doesn't my child respond to that?" You just dive in and learn as you go. No one can ever be fully prepared for what it takes to be a parent if they've never parented before.
