Great Ideas for After School Snacks

I am a Mom and I have been one for 23 years. I was also a student going to school about thirty years ago so I know what it is like to come home from school feeling hungry and wanting an after school snack. I like to give my kids a nutritious after school snack when they come home from school. When I have time I like to make a big event of eating an after school snack. My kids seem to like the quality time that we have when I make a special after school snack. It is time when I can find out what their day was like and I can fill them in on some things too.

I have the usual carrot sticks out but I know that on some days a carrot stick just doesn't cut it for an after school snack. My kids really like it when I make a pan of brownies and I let them have one for an after school snack. I usually can tell if it has been a hard day for them as soon as I see them. Sometimes they come home with a big smile on their face. Those are carrot sick days. Then there are the days when they are dragging their book bags up the porch. Those days may need to be a little more then a carrot stick day.

Sometimes we have a special after school snack at the dinning room table. I have a special tea set and I bring it out and we have a cup of cocoa with marshmallows from the tea set. Maybe I will have a cookie or cracker for them with there cocoa. That tea set is very special since my mom bought it from Germany. We have had many after school snacks with that tea set and it always is special just to drink from one of the cups.

Another special after school snack is the one that we watch a movie with. We pick out a good movie to watch as we eat our after school snack We usually sit on the floor and watch the movie and it seems special that we are all doing it together.

A real special after school snack is one we call the peanut party. This after school snack is one we do outside or on newspapers because it can be messy. I get peanuts in the shell and we sit in a circle with the newspaper under us and we crack open the peanuts and eat them. It is a great after school snack and makes the kids feel real special. It is a special time when we get together and find out a little about each others day.
