Seniors have so much wisdom an experience so many times. It's a shame that they often have few people to share it with or companions to socialize with. Social life is important when we get older because it takes us outside of ourselves and gives us support when we need it. It's healthy and fun to do things with others. And with some friends dying or sick, its also important to make new friends. It's really not hard if you know where to look to find things to do and new people to do them with.

http://www.agingcommission.org/Services.htm The Commission on aging that serves Memphis and surrounding counties also has some opportunities for senior volunteering for helping the community in a variety of ways. This is their official web site and seniors should at least look it over to see if something interests them. Serving others has long been recognized as a very effective way of regenerating the weary spirit and to meet other volunteers and the people served by seniors. Help someone at their homes, deliver meals to shut-ins and any number of things. Take a look and call them at 527-0208 to see how to go about volunteering or find out how you can help out. The site also has the phone numbers for all the Senior Centers in the area. This is a wonderful venue for very inexpensive hot meals, for entertainment and companionship. Call the Lewis Center, located on North Parkway at 272-7408. These centers are great for meeting other seniors as they're all there for the same reason--just to meet others in their age range-- and great friendships have resulted in the casual sharing of a lunch table with a stranger and a conversation shared there. Some of the activities they have are computer and Internet classes, dance events and classes, and recreational activities like chess and other games. There's so much to be learned and enjoyed by regular visits to these Centers that it's a shame not to investigate one near you. There are ten in the Mid South area.
