The NC Zoo is a perfect day trip for any family or organization. The zoo is located in Asheboro, North Carolina and is spread out over 500 acres. The zoo has an additional 900 acres of land for future development. The zoo is separated into North America and South America and has a large variety of species from each area. The North Carolina zoo is the nation's largest walk-through natural habitat zoo.Some of the most popular exhibits are the monkeys, polar bears, sea lions, river otters, giraffes, zebras and gorillas. The African Plains exhibit is a whopping 37 acres! In the North American prarie exhibit, visitors can see bison and elk in their natural habitats.The Sonora Desert is an indoor exhibit featuring rattlesnakes, gila monsters, tarantulas, road runners and many other types of dry, desert climate critters.
The best way to see the zoo is by foot. There are over five miles of trails for visitors to see all the zoo has to offer. There are trams available to take guests from one location to the other, but most exhibits are not visible by the tram. The zoo recommends atleast five hours for viewing all the zoo has to offer. The zoo has approximately one thousand animals throughout the park!!
In the African pavilion, guests can see African bullfrogs, cichlids, forest turtles, ducks, foxes, cattle egret, African rock python, ball pythons, wild dogs, eagles, monkeys, meerkats and other types of animals and plants.
In the African Plains you will find elephants, lions, lynx, waterbuck, gazelle, babboons, impalas, nyalas, monkeys, wolves, rhinos, storks, warthogs, gorillas and other animals.
While looking in the prarie, you will see bison, black bears, elk, grizzly bears, wolves, and other critters.
The RJR Nabisco Rocky Coast is the home to puffin, harbor seals, polar bears, parakeets, sea lions, and lots of tricks!!!
At the forest's edge, you will find giraffes, zebras, ostrich, plants and other critters.
