Embryonic Stem Cell Research: An AC Experiment on How Men and Women Differ on Their View of This
There is much debate going on about stem cell research. Everyone seems to have an opinion on this subject. Some people are all for it, some people are against it completely and some people are neutral. What I would really like to know is how males and females differ on their opinions on
this. First I will give you the background on the stem cell research debate, then I will show you my own private study on how men and women view this topic.
Background on the stem cell research debate:
With Embryonic stem cell research the creation of a human embryonic stem cell line requires the destruction of a human embryo. Stem cell researchers use embryos that were created but had not been used for in vitro fertility treatments to derive new stem cell lines. The majority of these embryos are marked to be destroyed, or stored indefinitely. In the United States alone, there have been estimated to be at least 400,000 such embryos.
For researchers they believe that stem cell research has the potential to dramatically help in understanding and treating diseases and to alleviate suffering. Embryonic stem cells have the capacity to grow indefinitely in a lab environment. Embryonic stem cells can differentiate into pretty much all types of bodily tissue. Researchers argue that the economic, personal and social cost of the diseases that embryonic stem cells have the potential to treat, far outweigh the costs associated with the destruction of the embryos.
The other side to this debate people who do not believe that embryonic stem cell research is moral. An embryo contains the potential to be a living breathing human, therefore the embryo should be valued as highly as a human life. The opposing of embryonic stem cell research has gone so far as to liken this research to murder. The people against this are claiming that it is morally and ethically wrong to create these embryos and then destroy them.
