Since the two-night season premiere of 24, I have been waiting for the other shoe to drop. Well, it has officially hit the floor with a booming thud. It has taken Muslim groups less than two-days to complain about the storyline for season 6 of the TV show 24. One of the groups trying to fight back over the series is the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Rabiah Ahmed, a spokeswoman for the Council said that they had a conference call on Wednesday with the Executives at the Fox network. In the call, they protested what was currently taking place on the show and "requested" a more positive spin on the way Muslims are portrayed. However, as of yet Fox has not caved to the organizations demands/requests. Wednesday night they issued a statement saying "they had not singled out any ethnic or religious group for blame in creating its characters."

Sireen Sawaf, an official at the Muslim Public Affairs Council (based out of Los Angeles), is a big fan of 24. She liked how the show had previously gone out of their way to show non-Muslim terror cells. Now that season 6 is showing Muslim terrorists act as Palestinian-styled "suicide bombers", among other things, Sawaf has said "But I'm concerned about the image it ingrains in the minds of the American public and the American government, particularly when you have anti-Muslim statements spewing from the mouths of government officials." So according to Ms. Sawaf's statement, it was okay for the producers of 24 to portray Russians, Germans, a white President of the US, or even a blond man as being a terrorist, but once they begin to portray a Muslim as a terrorist it is not okay.

An immigration lawyer in New Jersey, Sohail Mohammed, actually watched the season premiere with a reporter from the Associated Press. Mohammed states "I was shocked. Somewhere, some lunatic out there watching this will do something to an innocent American Muslim because he believes what he saw on TV." Mohammed represents some of the detainees from the 9/11 "dragnet". It will be interesting to see how Mr. Mohammed handles the continuing season of 24.

Will 24 be able to withstand the complaints this season?

Takeaways
  • Sireen Sawaf is a fan of 24, but is concerned over this seasons use of Muslims as terrorists.
  • Muslim groups fear that certain people in America may take the show seriously and cause a backlash against American Muslims.
  • Muslim groups wasted no time at complaining about the new season of 24, but where were they when the movie "Obsession" debuted?

Miss Faith, no, not offended. We both love the show as I said. Many muslims are more open minded than some people give them credit for, note I say some, not all. No stereotypes allowed in my mind. Obviously, you can't please everyone and it is only a show. We do have an unusual marriage but it works for us thankfully.

Nancy - I hope that comment didn't come off wrong because I meant nothing by it. It's pretty cool that you and your husband can have a great relationship and still be open on your opinions. And Celin- honestly, we Americans are actually smarter than you give us credit for. We are not "meatheads" like the white guy on the show was. In all actuallity, any backlash from Americans would be from all of the complaining, lawsuits, and boycotts...along with what happened on 9/11. A fictional show is not going to make the average American want to go after Muslims.

Nancy-Great comment since you see things from another view point. Oddly enough I thought you may side with the protesting, only because your husband is Muslim. Most wives tend to do this, but it's refreshing to see that you still keep your point of view no matter what beliefs your husband follows. I would hope that he finds your views refreshing as well.

I think the show has just moved onto a new type of terrorist, and will eventually move onto another one in the future. Considering that Muslims have 'terrorized' the US before, as has other groups, and 24 is going for the whole realistic look, it only makes sense that eventually it has a plot-line with Muslim terrorists. Its not showing all Muslims as bad. I mean, Jack shot Curtis to save a good Muslim because Curtis was going to kill him. They're just going for realism, and in todays day in age, this is it.

I completely agree with all of the Muslims who are protesting the show. I am an American Muslim and appartently the way that they are trying to portray the Muslim community is that of terrorists. The American public gets enough propaganda because of the way that Islam is portrayed by the News media, now they want to scare everyone into thinking our religion is terriorist based on tv show? They need to start showing the world the true Islam and not this extremeist propoganda.

I watched some of both premiere nights, and wasn't impressed at all. I agree with Stephanie, it is just overblown (and way over acted) propaganda. Which of course anyone is free to watch. I choose not to. Jack doesn't need to convert to Islam, just make a show worth spending time watching.

Seems like a lot of people are watching '24'.

Frankly, "24" deserves all the flack they get. Once one of my favorite shows on television, it has become some kind of unwatchable and perverse propaganda.

OK, finally got the article to show up. Great article and I think that the show does its best to be fair. The fact that there are more Muslim terrorist than other types of terrorist should justify seeing more of them on the show. 24 brings forth the fears of alot of people. As I mentioned before, my husband is a muslim and I'm a white girl from Virginia. He's a great dad and husband and we are extremely differant. We accept each other how we are but as I tell him, if they don't want to be portrayed this way, they should stop blowing stuff up.

Hi, I wanted to read this story but for some reason I can't see it here. Technical difficulties? 24 is one of my favorite shows and I just happen to be married to an arabic guy whose a muslim. He loves 24 too. Any ideas on where the article went?

Benscudder - I would like to think that if I were in that scenario I would be deeply offended over their current actions, but it's hard to say unless you are one of those people. If you could find someone to interview that survived 9/11 then that would be a great article!

Oliver - I thought it would be a nice touch to add a little humor for the sub headline since the news was so serious. Glad I could make you laugh.

Thanks T.H for the great rating! I welcome comments of any type, I just hate it when I get a low rating because someone doesn't agree with what is written, whether it's my opinion or not.

Paul - I think you've made a great point about giving the season more time. It seems like the Muslim community has been jumping on everything right away instead of giving it time. Even though I'm sure there are times when they should, for the most part I think they need to bring it down a notch or two. And for your assessment of the meathead and the neighbors, I didn't even think of that. But also, couldn't all "jocks" or even white men get upset since the show made the "muslim" appear more intelligent than them (since he was able to fool them so easy)? I know that's off subject of what you were saying but...I apparently like poking the bear and bringing more stuff to light ;)
