A-line silhouettes are invading fashion in a big way, but probably not the way most of us would expect. While plenty of women have a collection of a-line skirts and dresses in their closet, up until recently, I'm guessing, only a few had a-line coats or tops as a part of their wardrobe. This brand new trend is called the trapeze coat (or top). Chances are, your favorite trendy boutique already has several of them in stock.

How To Wear It
Believe it or not, this odd looking garment isn't at all hard to wear. Many may expect the trapeze coat to be unflattering, and add width to whoever wears one, but I've found it to do the opposite. They key is knowing what to pair a trapeze coat or top with. When the silhouette is wide on top, it's usually best to go narrow on bottom. Skinny or boot cut jeans make the best impression when paired with a trapeze coat, as do pencil skirts.

The top you wear with a trapeze coat is also very important. If you're looking for the type of coat to hide what you have underneath, a trapeze coat probably isn't the best choice considering most only have one or two buttons at the top, and hang open at the bottom. In addition to that, it's not uncommon to find trapeze coats with half or three quarter length sleeves. Wearing a long sleeve top that hits at the hips is the best way to fight the cold and balance out the proportions of the outfit.

Takeaways
  • Trapeze coats are flared, a-line jackets, often with kimono sleeves.
  • These coats look best with pencil skirts, skinny jeans or bootcut jeans.
  • Forever 21 is a great place to get a cheap trapeze coat.
