Many times when parents place their children in the hands of technology, they're taking a huge safety risk. The technology responsible for creating car safety seats for children is often overlooked. In May of 2003, Consumer Reports decided to test the validity of car seat manufacturers' claims that their products sufficiently protect small children in the event of car collisions. Recently, the conducted another study. But instead of running the same kinds of experiments as were previously performed, Consumer Reports kicked things up a notch by testing the seats in collisions during speeds of 35mph or greater. The results were astounding. At least 12 different brand car seats were tested. And of those chosen, only two were actually recommended for providing the most protection in the event of an accident. The controversy over this discovery follows Consumer Reports' previous testing results. The consumer publication reported on a number of car seats and advised the public that they were indeed safe for children. Their recent discovery has prompted executives to retract an earlier article on their study. The original study, published in the May 2003 issue indicated that the child safety seats were only tested at speeds of 30mph, and only during front impact collisions. Side and rear impact collisions upon most recent studies showed horrifying results. A recent expose on the ABC news network displayed child-sized dummies being violently bent in various directions from the higher-speed side and rear impact collisions.
