Downsizing the Declaration of Independance

2
Anyone familiar with the Declaration of Independence (as all good United States citizens should be) knows that included in its second paragraph is the statement that 'all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable Rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness'. This statement was intended as an inviolate trust between the governed and those who govern. I wish to pose a question that may seem outlandish at first glance but will hopefully seem less so when I am finished. Does corporate downsizing/layoffs/restructuring/rightsizing or whatever trendy term used to describe the wholesale firing of loyal and good workers violate the trust previously mentioned?

Before the Socialist bashers out there reach for their brushes with the implicit intent to paint me as a 'red'(as if such a word matters still in a world where the green of cash now dominates) let me make something perfectly clear. I am not talking about the right to hire and fire a person on the basis of merit. With every job, there is an unwritten contract between an employee and employer that states that the employee should perform his duties in exchange for the pay he receives. Should a store clerk, for example, prove incompetent at his job then by all means he should be fired. That is only common sense and good business.
