When we hear of a child being home schooled we are not quite as taken back as we were a few years ago, although there still is a bit of surprise. People choose to home school for various reasons all of which are of the best intentions. Whether or not it is the best thing for the child in everyway is a matter of opinion. It would seem to as though if anyone is qualified to teach our children, then why are we sending our teachers to school for 4 or 5 years to be educated in the field? I am not advocating home schooling or institutional schooling as I feel this is a personal choice and it should remain this way. At the same time there are some things which should be considered.
Those who home school may have children of any age and sex, although studies show that females are home schooled a bit more than males. However, those who are home schooled tend to be Caucasians and have a two parent family from a moderate income. In addition the family most likely has one parent who is not working outside the home, or is working part-time. Statistics show that more than 36 million women and children under the age of 18 are not working outside of the home.
There are no particular requirements to become a home school instructor. Anyone can do this even if they have not finished high school or earned a GED themselves. From the time children are born they are learning and they love to learn. They learn through acts of play as well as a formal classroom setting. Those who home school form a great bond with their children as they continue to grow, explore, and learn with them.
You will not have to worry that home schooling may be considered as illegal in your State. Home schooling is legal everywhere in the United States. While home schooling is legal in every state, states will vary as far as laws and regulations. Be sure to find out what your state will require before you start to home school your child. There are many home schooling groups locally and online who will help you learn the ropes, and you can also contact your state's representative.
