If the ulcer grows it could constrict a major blood vessel or cause a leak, which could turn into a hemorrhage, which could be fatal. Ulcers can also erode completely and perforate the stomach wall or duodenum. When this happens, your stomach's contents can flow into your abdominal cavity and cause a severe infection. A perforated ulcer is extreme and requires emergency surgery.
