Peptic ulcers can occur at any age and are not prejudice to gender. Both men and women can be affected. Located in the stomach and the duodenum, which is the first part of the intestine leading from the stomach, if left untreated, a peptic ulcer can cause years of pain and suffering. Luckily those who are unfortunate enough to have a peptic ulcer can find relief much easier than they could a generation ago. Experts say that this day and time there is only a one in 18 chance that surgery will be necessary. There are new medications that work to relieve the symptoms that peptic ulcers cause.

Sometimes there are no warning signs. But if you feel a constant discomfort in your mid or upper abdomen between meals or in the middle of the night, you would do well to have yourself checked for a peptic ulcer. Antacid tablets can provide temporary relief. They have been the non-prescription remedy most people with an ulcer turn to for relief from the pain in their stomach. But the problem with antacids is that they are only a band aid and temporary measure that don't alleviate the problem. If you suspect you have a stomach ulcer, you should not ignore the warning signs or substitute antacids for trained medical care. Complications from peptic ulcers are serious and even lethal in some cases.

Blood in the stool is one of the urgent warnings of a bleeding ulcer. A bleeding ulcer can cause anemia. If the ulcer grows it could constrict a major blood vessel or cause a leak, which could turn into a hemorrhage, which could be fatal. Ulcers can also erode completely and perforate the stomach wall or duodenum. When this happens, your stomach's contents can flow into your abdominal cavity and cause a severe infection. A perforated ulcer is extreme and requires emergency surgery.
