This article started as a plea for the replacement of the Star Spangled Banner as the United States national anthem, on the grounds that the lyrics are incomprehensible to most Americans, if, indeed, most people here even know them, unnecessarily bellicose and that the music is impossible for all but the best trained vocalists to sing. As in many of the times one gets involved with background research, it is far too easy to become distracted.

A recent article in the local newspapers announced that Florida's new Governor, Charlie Crist, had chosen a different song to mark his official introduction into office this month. A spokesman for the Governor said he was concerned "about the song's racial implications".

Florida's official state song, "Old Folks at Home" and also known by its first line, "Way Down Upon the Swanee River" was formally adopted by the Florida legislature on May 25, 1935. The lyrics, as originally written and as adopted by Florida, are not easily found on any official web site of the state:

Way down upon de Swanee ribber,

Far, far away,

Dere's wha my heart is turning ebber,

Dere's wha de old folks stay.

All up and down de whole creation

Sadly I roam,

Still longing for de old plantation

And for de old folks at home.

All de world am sad and dreary,

Ebry where I roam,

Oh! darkeys how my heart grows weary,

Far from de old folks at home.

All round de little farm I wandered

When I was young,

Den many happy days I squandered,

Many de songs I sung.

When I was playing wid my brudder

Happy was I

Oh! take me to my kind old mudder,

Dere let me live and die.

One little hut amond de bushes,

One dat I love,

Still sadly to my mem'ry rushes,

No matter where I rove

When will I see de bees a humming

All round de comb?

When will I hear de banjo tumming

Down in my good old home?

Takeaways
  • The official State Song of Florida, written by a man who had never been in the state, is offensive to many people and needs to be changed. Other states, need to examine their songs and symbols.

Why are we having to accept these songs as choices. Frankly they are all very depressing and in the mind ofmost people I have talked with they are totally ridiculas. I can't imagine hearing either of these songs before a ball game when the mood is upbeat and the crowd is ready to route for the home team. We are not a poor state, we have a great singer that if approached, I am sure could write and record a perfect tribute to our state for a fair sum. Try Jimmy Buffett!!!!! We need some life in our state song to match the fun and frolicking way we all feel when we are hear (our tourist feel the same way). Before it is too late and we are stuck with one of these disasters, please Governor Crist, reconsider this. One of your St Petersburg neighbors.

Have you seen the lyrics for the new Florida State Song candidates? How stupid--where's the stuff about developers, concrete, bulldozers, traffic, etc.? C'mon, let's have a reality check.

Say what you will about the American National Anthem, it still sends shivers down my spine whenever I hear it, and I know I'm not alone. Most of my friends feel the same way. Maybe the state song should be changed, but when it was written, it was deemed just fine for its time. Changing it seems to smack of banning Mark Twain because of some of the language he used in his books.

Ah, the good 'ole south...it's the first I have heard of this too, but sadly, I wasn't as shocked as Sharon...

Before I finished reading page one, I looked to the left to see if this was in the humor section and I was aghast. It is serious?! I am shocked. Why is this the first time I'm hearing about this? Thanks for the eye opener. I may build a Google News Alert to follow this story.
