Sarah Palin was not inside when the Wasilla church fire was started. Governor Palin apologized for potentially being the cause of the Wasilla church fire started in minus 20-degree F weather. A multi-agency task force has been established to investigate the Wasilla church fire. That task force will make the determination about whether the Wasilla church fire was caused by arson.

Same Sex Marriage Motive for the Wasilla Church Fire

One motive proposed by WMC_TV for the Wasilla church fire may be Sarah Palin's opinions on same sex marriage, documented by the Human Rights Campaign during the election. So far, other churches that came forward during an April 2007 vote on benefits for same sex partners in Anchorage have not been targeted. Although a bill, according to an Alaska state law opinion, to change the Alaska constitution on the subject of same sex marriage was proposed by Norman Rokeberg in 1995, a legal opinion by the state attorney general informed him that Alaskan state common law would not allow same sex marriage according to a. In 1998 voters in Alaska rejected a bid to allow same sex marriage, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. More recently, voters voted on same sex benefits, according to the Anchorage Daily News.

Because the issue of same sex marriage has been voted upon, it seems unlikely that this is the motive without further evidence.

It's impossible for me to wrap my arms around why some people would perpetrate violent acts - no matter how much the ideologies differ.

Church fires are horrible. The cause behind a deliberate church fire is always the small minded idiot who lights the match.

I hope they do get to the bottom of what caused the fire (and why, too, if it was indeed arson). And hope (vainly, I'm sure) that news reporters would be more keen on getting it right rather than getting it first, even if the first scoop turns out to be wrong and inflammatory! It shouldn't be that uncomfy for them to wait until the investigation is done before highlighting a single potential motivation behind a possible arson when they haven't got evidence that back that motivation more than the others. :o( Most people who support marital rights for gays don't burn churches. Thanks for your even-handed reporting, Sheri! :o)

Wow! Hate crime is such a terrible thing and I don't understand why people have to be so mean. Everyone is entitled to his or her own preference, no matter what anyone says or does. Great reporting on this.
