Why Do We Care?

Sadly, my language is not always as sedate as the title implies, but that is a phrase a young woman on one of the Survivor epsiodes said frequently and it kind of just caught my ear.

Television is kind of - sort of where I am heading with this article; but I'm not exactly sure of where we may end up. Buckle your seat belts, I'm on quite a roll!

In the past few weeks I have had to miss quite a bit of work due to illness and have passed some of the time in front of the television. This is something that I had always thought I would really enjoy. Instead it has turned me bitter and angry.

Just a few days ago some mindless program was discussing the benefits of Oprah becoming President of the United States. What in the world is that about? Don't get all defensive on me now - I love Oprah - she has contributed so much to education and other charities - what is there not to love?...but President? Come on, now! Of course, I do remember seeing her 50th Birthday show (yes, I taped it and watched it when I came home) and she said that Nelson Mandela was the first one to call to wish her a Happy Birthday. Now that does show some impressive Diplomatic skills - but President? And...did anyone happen to catch the program where she went shopping at Walmart? I was a bit offended by that one. Was she for real when she said she didn't know how she was going to go through that little door (the door for the carts to be shoved in), or was it a planned Jessica Simpson Chicken of the Sea Oprah 'aha' moment? Did she really not know that you could purchase bras there. But the most upsetting thing to me was that she continuously referred to the Walmart Associates as 'the people in the blue vests". Oh, Oprah - they all wear name tags!

Would you be able to go for one month without talk shows, entertainment news shows, entertainment mags, and the biggest test of all, not reading the headlines from the tabloids at the checkouts in all of the stores?

Ive caught myself asking the same questions, Ive come to the conclusion that alot of people really dont care. But some start to once the media tells them to. Its like KFC's famous bowls, they were called *famous bowls* from the beginning. What makes them famous? KFC . Selling people things they dont want is relatively hard compared to convincing people they want the things your selling.

I completetly agree! Oh and by the way, I love the way you wrote this! Good work!

I *so* agree with you! So Jerry-Jerry-Jerry is also doing those stupid "Who's the Daddy?" shows...I know that Maury has really gotten into that brainless and tired theme for probably the last couple of years. I used to watch both of those shows when they had something better to offer, but I only tune in occasionally now to see if they've gone back to offerings above caveman-level...
