Review of the Diablotek Black Ultra SATA USB 2.0 Aluminum Hard Drive Enclosure
My crappy Presario V6000 died recently. It was easily the lousiest computer I ever owned. Right out of the box, the crummy power cord didn't fit into the power port. Next, we had to call HP/Compaq and were transferred to some guy in India who seemed
incapable of understanding how the power cord wouldn't fit. It took us over an hour to explain it to the guy. We had to mail the laptop to them and got it back to find that it no longer worked at all. Again we spent hours trying to explain to some guy from India that they sent us back our laptop not working. We sent it to them again and at last it returned working and with a power cord that actually fit. Great news, right? Well, sort of. The wireless card was always hit or miss and the thing crashed several times a day.
I would have gladly bought some explosives and detonated the thing in the front yard, but there were a lot of pictures that were on the hard drive that we still wanted. A computer place nearby told us it would cost $100 to transfer the pictures from the laptop's hard drive to our desktop's. I'm not sure why anybody would consider paying such a ridiculous amount when you can just buy a hard drive enclosure and transfer the files yourself.
I ordered the Diablotek Black Ultra SATA USB 2.0 Aluminum Hard Drive Enclosure from Tigerdirect.com for $19.99. It comes with the enclosure, a power cord, a USB 2.0 cord, a screwdriver, a stand, and a disc. The disc, which contains a driver, is not necessary if you have Windows 2000/ME/XP. For Windows 2000/ME/XP the enclosure is plug and play. The supplied screwdriver easily opened the enclosure, and my hard drive plugged right into the appropriate slot inside the enclosure. The enclosure had plenty of room to hold my little laptop hard drive.
