The Devil Wears Prada: Another Princess Diaries Without the Fairy Tale Ending
I'm starting to think that, if you see one Anne Hathaway movie, you've seen them all.
When I watched the Devil Wears Prada for the first time this weekend, I thought it was a wonderfully funny film full of twists and turns.
Hathaway plays Andy Sachs, a journalism student who takes a job as an assistant at a fashion magazine and learns just how cut-throat the business is. She sacrifices her personal life for the job, which "a million girls" would want in the
hopes of opening up future doors.
Overall, it's a great film; much better than I thought it would be. And, I would recommend it to all my friends.
But, after having time to reflect on what I've seen, I realized, to my disappointment, I had just re-watched the Princess Diaries set in a different setting and with a slightly different ending.
For example, in the Princess Diaries, Anne Hathaway plays Mia Thermopolis, a teenager who learns she is a princess and reluctantly takes the job. In the Devil Wears Prada, her character has no interest in fashion but reluctantly takes the job to pay her rent.
Another similarity (the first one I noticed) is, in the Princess Diaries, Hathaway's character is a major fashion victim and undergoes a major makeover. The same thing happens to her in the Devil Wears Prada; it just isn't as drastic as a change.
In addition, in the Princess Diaries, Hathaway needs to impress her grandmother, the queen, who is very solemn, though she will occasionally show emotion. Again, very similar to Meryl Streep's character Miranda Priestly, who is a demanding boss but shows enough emotion toward the end of the movie to get people on her side. And, much like in the Princess Diaries, Hathaway is working so hard to fit in, she loses her best friend and her boyfriend.
In fact, Andy Sachs reminded me a lot of Princess Mia. She is always up beat and happy, even as those around her are somber. And, she starts out as being very naïve and having people take advantage of her.
