The battle of the sexes is perhaps one of the most peculiar discussions that have ever taken place. Each gender seems to have an innate need to try to show that their gender is better than the others. This discussion created the entire notion of feminism, spawned countless books, and arguments. Most recently there was an article written on Associated Content which tried to argue that it costs more to be a man than a woman, and it was written by yours truly. What would cause a male such as my self to write such an article? Was I just offering some interesting tidbits about the differing genders or was I subconsciously trying to justify that it is harder to be a man and thus should get some more slack? People's actions become much more interesting when you factor in that people are inherently trying to show that their gender is superior.

In that article, I provided some facts about why it was more costly to be a man. I argued that men tend to have larger groceries bills, have greater debt, and drive more. All of these facts are statistically true, but what I completely ignored from the situation is that if there are statistical costs which make it more expensive to be a man, are there not also costs which are statistically greater for women? There must be. By only focusing on these issues and not the total cost of being a man or a woman, I was being motivated by my subconscious need to promote gender superiority.

Let's face it; there are additional costs to being a woman as well. You have to pay for all sorts of additional body care products that men don't have to deal with. You also have to deal with the additional costs of certain shots which are for women only such as the HPV vaccine which is a total of $360! Women are also expected to look nice and wear good clothing, where as most people could care less what mean wear. Women have to spend a lot more in clothing and beauty products to fit the role that society expects them to be in. In reality, it's probably a wash as to which gender costs more to be.

We're different, but let's accept that.

Takeaways
  • When talking about gender issues, too often we are trying to argue that our gender is somehow better than the other.
  • The on-going battle of the sexes only perpetuates the idea that men and women are not equal.
  • Instead of arguing that our gender is better, let's try to understand eachother's differences.
