Is the Red 40 Food Dye Additive Having a Negative Impact on Your Child?

Red 40 is a commonly used food coloring dye added to a variety of products. While it may make food esthetically pleasing in appearance, it can cause a negative reaction in those who consume it.

Children are most often the ones who have sensitivity to red 40, whether or not their parents have realized it or not. Reactions include temper tantrums, hyperactivity, aggressive behavior, uncontrollable crying and screaming, kicking, nervousness, dizziness, inability to concentrate and
sit still among other findings. Physically you may get frequent headaches or migraines, upset stomach and feel ill after ingesting this additive. Often when Red 40 is eliminated from the child's diet a remarkable change is noticed immediately.

Red 40 is used in many food products including kool-aid, orange and other flavored sodas, cheetos and dorito chips, strawberry pop-tarts, any candy with red coloring to it including m&m's, skittles, many chewing gums, etc. Also many children's vitamins and pain relievers/cold medicine have red 40 in the ingredients.

When red 40 was first approved by the FDA as a food coloring additive there was some controversy as to whether or not it caused tumors and cancer. Those claims have been proven to be false but now many parents, Doctors and Teachers are becoming aware of other concerns regarding intake of red 40, especially in young children.

Many times consumable products include both high amounts of sugar as well as red #40 so it can be hard to determine if the child's behavior or reaction is because of the sugar or because of the food dye. Both can cause similar results but it is clear that red 40 can be a culprit on it's own as similar results occur when sugar is not present. Children who have been diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) generally have significant improvements of their behavior and ability to concentrate when artificial additives such as red food dye is removed from their diet. Red 40 can also affect adults; it is a common trigger for migraines. It can also cause an upset stomach and make you feel uncomfortable and jittery.

I have migranes, and I have been trying to cut out red 40 for a while now. I did find that Kroger has their own brand of drink mixes with no dye. It does have aspertane but the dye free fruit punch takes me back to my child hood kool aid days. They have a dye free grape and cherry flavor too.

I truly believe in not feeding the dyes to children. I have alot of behavior issues with my son. We do the neurofeedback. It is amazing what that does to him. They told us to start cutting out the dyes. We did it for a couple of days and saw some changes. It is tough to keep it up. But we are trying. He also has a seizure disorder. I'm sure your husband has heard of neurofeedback. They also told us no pop except clear pop.

In most of Europe Red #40 is banned. Companies can't put it in their food because of the reaction that it causes. I discovered that my daughter was allergic when she was about 2 1/2. She would have fits of rage that frankly frightened me to the point that I was ready to have her examined by a psychologist. After running across some publications that talked about it I figured that it wouldn't hurt anything to eliminate it from her diet. After a couple of weeks I couldn't believe the difference. She had gone from having to be physically restrained on the floor to keep her from hurting herself or others, to being the happy-go-lucky girl that we love. I have 2 other kids, both younger, that I've decided not to even take the chance that they will have a reaction, and eliminated it from their diets as well. On the days that someone else gives them a food with red dye in it, I can tell within minutes. Their entire body language and attitude changes. It takes a couple of days to clea

Red dye 40 definately has a negative impact on the behavior of myself and my children. I have even created a blog reddyefree.blogspot.com to advocate for all of the children who are being misdiagnosed as either having ADHD or a conduct disorder. My husband who is a neurologist believes that red dye 40 can create neurological changes. My children do not eat anymore artificially dyed foods, namely red dye 40 and we have seen a remarkable change in their behavior, in their schoolwork, with fine motor skills and handling day to day frustrations with ease. Please check out my blog site to petition artificial dyes and to learn more about it.

I don't have an allegy. Nor even a high intolerance. It may sounds silly to even mention this, but my poop turns bright red! Like a fire engine. Especially with drinks with Red#40. I thought at first I was bleeding - but it isn't blood. It's the dye coming out, completely unharmed by stomach acids.

Apparently the food industry is putting bugs in alot of the foods we eat. These bugs are called Cochineal. These bugs produce a red dye coloring that food industries use. They make sure the bugs are dead by boiling them, then dry them out in the sun or a stove, releasing the red dye, then they grind them up small enough and throw them in the foods.
