Is the Red 40 Food Dye Additive Having a Negative Impact on Your Child?
Of course not all bad behavior and ADHD are a result of food dyes but it can most definitely be a contributing factor and is one worth looking into. Red 40 is not an essential part of our diet, it's quite the opposite. Red #3 and Red #40 are the two food coloring additives approved for use in food (by the FDA) yet if they were sprayed on weeds they would work as a pesticide. Many parents have had success in eliminating red 40 from their child's diet, the results have been favorable.
It's hard to get away from this food dye completely as it's in a large number of products. Always read the ingredient label and anytime you see the word "red" be cautious. Often those sensitive to red food dyes also have reactions to yellow. Inform your child's school and teacher, daycare and babysitters so they are aware of a possible reaction. So much of convenience and junk food geared towards children contains harmful additives and dyes. Educate your children about what they should look for, so they know red 40 is not something they should consume.

- Red 40 is a commonly used food coloring dye added to a variety of products.
- Children are most often the ones who have sensitivity to red 40, whether or not their parents have realized it or not.
- Reactions include temper tantrums, hyperactivity, aggressive behavior, uncontrollable crying and screaming, kicking, nervousness, dizziness, inability to concentrate.
Red 40 is a dye also known as Allura Red, Food Red 17, C.I. 16035, and FD&C Red 40. Read ingredients carefully.

Okaaaay. I think somebody's been sipping too much Red 40 to believe this kills either weeds or the bugs on weeds. In fact being an extract of coal it probably CAME from weeds. Anyway there is precious little proof that Red 40 affects significant populations of people, see http://en.wikipedia.or/wiki/Allura_Red_AC for more information see also the links at the bottom of the page to the studies referenced. So why did I write this? See http://xkcd.com/386/ Awesome comment Evil Johny, good for a laugh

Actually Red #40 makes me extremely hostile, almost unapproachable. As a kid I was normally calm and playful until my mother noticed certain changes in my behavior hitting teachers, fighting other children, destroying whatever I touched. For a while my parents thought I was losing my mind until they took me to a doctor who asked does he drink a lot of red juices she said yes his juice (a substitute for soda). blah blah for like 6 years I could not have anything red. It was far too late by then, the damage was done. Now I am just a mean sob.
Oh yeah baby. I'm back! Before Sue,
Ann states that Red 40 is made from "a crushed up metal".
She is wrong. According to the FDA : These color additives are derived primarily from petroleum and are sometimes known as "coal-tar dyes" or "synthetic-organic" colors.
Nevermind about that, I don't care about ADHD (which I may very well have),
I just care about killing the bugs that are terrorizing and woefully, killing, my weeds.

the more I think of this, the more it doesn't make sense. maybe i'm consuming too much red40 but why would I want to kill pests on my weeds? who cares if bugs are eating my weeds? I don't want weeds in my garden anyway! I'm going to drink a whole bottle of red and then go handpick the bugs of my weeds and then i'll kill the weeds all the while drooling and shivering with rage. This just doesn't seem to be a real factiod.

...after rereading, instead of skimming the article, the author actually says red #40 kills bugs on weeds, not the weeds themselves. In addition my original complaint about no source, after researching lightly (first 3 google pages) I was not able to find anything about red dye (by itself) being used as a pesticde. Please tell me where you got this information.

Where is the source for the
red #40 kills weeds?
How much dye?
Does it kill other plants too?
When you make a statement
of apparent fact to back up
your theory, you gotta let me
know the source. I'm not saying
that it is not true, I don't know,
but I sure would like to
cross reference before I share
this with friends.

Oh the migraines!! For my everyday afternoon snack break, I replaced drinking soda with a bottle of ruby red grapefruit thinking it was a better, healthy choice. As I responded to my doctor's list of migraine triggers he mentioned Red dye 40. Days later, as I started reading labels on everything I eat, I discovered just how many products use red dye 40; stopped the daily drink of ruby red grapefrut juice and my migraines were almost eliminted completely!

Red dye 40 is actually a crushed up metal and it's not natural for our bodies to digest it. I would go for any natural items that can color a product if you care what they truly look like. Tumeric, beet juice, beta caroteen, there are numerious one out there. Red40.org has a list of products Red 40 can be found in & it's substantial. I've been allergic since I was 18, 18 years ago. If anyone is having an itchy throat, the allergy could be getting worse, they tend to change every 7 years. I carry a epipen with me at all time. My reaction to Red 40 is that my eyes swell over to almost golf ball size for 2 full days and I cannot see besides feeling ill. The FDA is years behind on everything...why should this be any different. There are plenty of products on the market that are not researched. It's a pity.

Does anyone know of or can suggest something to counteract the red dye 40?

Is anybody DOING anything about finding a safe red (and yellow) food coloring? Or are we doomed to keep commenting to each other for the rest of our lives? Or maybe I should try to make Red Velvet Cake with beet juice?! On the other hand, what do you suppose is in beet juice....
