Generations past - through the first half of the 20th century - seemed to live by a general consensus on what was right or wrong, acceptable or unacceptable, moral or immoral. Obviously, in every time period there have always existed those on the edge of society who rejected the basic standards and morality of the majority. However, in the past, that type of individual would have generally remained in the background, unwilling to be recognized or blatantly reject the accepted norms. The reality of current society appears to be the polar opposite of that scenario. Not only has basic morality that used to be the norm been replaced by ambiguous standards that are tantamount to a lack of morality, but also those who in the past remained on the shadowy edges of society now appear to be in the mainstream. Any who would dare to question this new reality are labeled "politically incorrect" at best, or ignorant and unenlightened at worst.

I like your article but it seems by the end you see not one possible solution. I think one thing is that either the the media or the viewer that has to change. Television is such an intergal part of our lives that what happens to it happens to us. I'm sure everyone hates to admit that they are so easily manipulated but think about the endless hours we sometimes spend gaping at it. Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire, Survivor, Fear Factor; everyone knows these shows but have you thought about the behaviors they are teaching? The first one teaches us that we should marry for money, the second teaches us how to politicize our relationships and the last one teaches us to sell yourself for indignities. These shows may be entertaining but it's like junk food for the brain and should be treated as such. We spend way too much time watching television to not expect degradation in this media to affect the mind so watch less and think about what your watching before you spend that ha
