Lavender is great for repelling all types of insects. If during the summer you have a problem with ants, cockroaches, or anything else, lavender can be very useful around the house. It will keep all of these insects outside away from the plant. Its best to sprinkle it around the kitchen since this is where most insects are during the summer.

Lavender has so many different uses and at the same time it is really easy to grow. Lavender plants need full hot sun when growing. They do not do very well in shade. They need lots of room to grow and also like good organic soil to grow in. Good compost or potting soil is the best. They don't like to be put right on clay where they have nothing to grab on to. They will rot right out. That is why it is very important to give them good compost or potting soil.

You can start lavender plants by seed if you like. You can collect the seeds in the fall, dry them out and start them in the spring. You can also buy them at any garden center or farmers market already in a pot grown. You can plant them any time of the year although spring and fall is probably the best because then they wont dry out with a small chance of losing them. Plant them so the root is covered and the plan is exposed. They just grow wonderfully. They will also come back year after year as long as they are taken care of properly.

Every fall once the flowers have died completely back, it is good to trim them a little to make them more into a circle. This is good because if you leave them wild and they grow really long; over the years they become very lanky. By doing this they will grow very lush and full the next year. This will in turn give you a much better lavender plant.
