Patio Ponds

Many people are enjoying the style and ambiance of a garden pond; in their yards, on their balconies and patios. No longer the sole domain of the wealthy, anyone can afford a pond, fountain or waterfall of their own.

The simplest way to add water to your outdoor living area is setting up your own birdbath. Just put a shallow dish of water out for the birds to splash in. It only needs to be an inch deep and about six inches wide - a pie tin, flower pot saucer or bowl works very well. Make sure to
replace the clean water every day and wash the container every few days. You can hang a birdbath or put one on a pedestal or table to give the birds a chance to bathe in peace, away from cats and other animals.

To grow some water plants, including water lilies, you will need a bigger bowl or tub in your garden. There are many options available in garden centres or you may even have something suitable in the garage. You can buy complete kits for a tub water garden, or buy the pieces separately. You will need a small pond pump if you want the soothing, tinkling sound of moving water - there is nothing quite as enjoyable.

Here are some tips for setting up your water garden.

---For water plants, you will need a container that is 12 inches deep at least. Water lilies, in particular, need deep water to thrive.

---Pot the water plants into soil and put pebbles on top to stop the soil making the whole pond messy.

---Place the pots on bricks to get the plants to the right height.

---Use floating plants if your plants are sparse, as they block the sunlight and reduce algae build up.

---Add some cold water fish for an extra splash of color.

---Take precautions with garden ponds if small children will have access to the yard.

---If you live in a cold climate, you might need to consider where you will put your tub water garden during winter to prevent the water freezing.

---If you are using an electric pump, make sure that you have a grounded power outlet.

Build your water garden, whether you have a small bowl or tub or a full garden pond. Provide a habitat for native birds and wildlife, including frogs, and the whole family will enjoy this unique experience.
