Keep Spyware Away. Spyware is essentially software that is installed on your computer without your notice that shows you unsolicited advertisements. Often times spyware also watches what websites you go to and other activities you perform on your computer and reports it to someone with devious purposes. Download a free spyware removing program such as Adaware and Windows Defender to keep spyware off of your computer.
Run a Firewall. There are all sorts of viruses which scan computers for vulnerabilities. Chances are your computer is being scanned once a minute. A great way to keep these vulnerabilities from being seen and letting all of the bad stuff get through is to use a firewall. This will block all unknown internet traffic to your computer. You can download a firewall program or use the one built into windows.
Perform a Cleanup. Periodically go through and delete all of your old files. Empty your recycling bin, clear your internet explorer history and files, uninstall un-needed programs. This will keep your computer running fast and allow it to run much longer.
Run Anti-Virus Software. Make sure you are using an anti-virus program to keep malware off of your computer. Quite often viruses go into the wild and attack thousands of systems before Microsoft even knows about it. Run up to date antivirus software, such as AVG Antivirus of Symantec Antivirus on your system.
