Pinoy Twilight Fans Outraged Over Filming of Takipsilim

Earlier this week, Philippine-based ABS-CBN reported that filming is set to begin for a Tagalog television series based on the movie Twilight called Takipsilim. Filipino fans of the American version are outraged that this new version isn't just a voice over, and that new Pinoy actors will replace all of the original Twilight actors.

Fans know this remake will have devastating effects on how they envision the characters, and worry that the chemistry between characters Edward Cullen and Isabella Swan will be almost non-existent.

As an outsider, it might seem strange that Filipino Twilight fans are protesting a Tagalog version of a movie and series of books they are so passionate about, but many Pinoy fans feel as if this is just another cheesy rip off in a long line of recent pop-culture remakes. For instance, popular English hip hop songs have been remade in Tagalog (apparently they sound ridiculous to native Tagalog speakers), and shows like Gossip Girl have also been remade with a Pinoy cast. It's shocking how many Filipinos are literally embarrassed about their nationality because of the making of Takipsilim. They hate how their nation feels the need to continuously imitate popular media coming from other countries instead of coming up with original ideas.
