Each day more and more of us are faced with the reality of dealing with aging parents. Depending on your level of involvement with your parent(s) this may become quite a daunting and cumbersome task. The thought of adding one more responsibility into a life already packed with marriage, children and career obligations may push you close to the edge but if you remember that these are the people that helped to raise you, you may find the strength to help them along in their "golden" years.

Realizing that your parents are getting older is hard to face, after all it makes us realize that we too are getting older and that there is no such thing as being immortal. This realization also brings along the need for some very serious and sometimes difficult conversations. Below are some ideas for things you need to discuss with your parent(s) before it is too late. The more you are prepared, the easier the most difficult of situations will become.

First and foremost, discuss with your parents their wishes. Nobody likes to talk about the morbid or taboo subjects of death and getting old but the truth is that both are facts of life and most of us have ideas how we want to face and deal with both. Your parents may even have arrangements you aren't aware of in case they find themselves needing care as they age.

One of the key things to remember is that aging and death cause so many arguments among family members. Remember the main objective is to make sure that things are in order and that you won't have more than you can handle in the time of crisis. If you have siblings, one of them may already know all of your parents' plans. Don't be offended if you are told this. It isn't a popularity contest and shouldn't be taken as such. Go to that sibling and just say, "Hey mom/dad said that they already talked to you about their plans. Do you have all the info we need?" As long as they do, be satisfied and not offended.
