American Film Institute to Issue Updated Tenth Anniversary List of 100 Greatest American Movies of All Time

Ten years ago the American Film Institute kicked off their 100 Years 100 Movies list with the mother of them all, the 100 Greatest American Movies of All Time. To nobody's surprise, Citizen Kane topped the list ten years ago.
(How Lawrence of Arabia, a film written, directed, produced and starring Brits even made the nominating stage is still one of the great mysteries of the modern age). Surprisingly, the American Film Institute has decided to issue another list of the 100 Greatest American Movies of All Time. Since that first list, the AFI has put out such top 100 lists as the best comedies, best villains and heroes, and best romantic movies. Apparently, they ran out of ideas so they've returned to where it all began.

What is most shocking about this decision is that in the ten years since the first list came out it is beyond question that no movie has been released that stands to make the new top ten. There's very little reason to suspect that any new movie will crack the top twenty. I am dubious that any movie released in the last ten years would slide into the top thirty. But that would be if the people making the lists really had an agenda of deciding on the best movies of all time. Remember, folks, these are the same people who chose the original Star Wars over what is universally agreed upon as the best Star Wars movie of all time, at least up till then: The Empire Strikes Back. These are the same people who chose Rocky as one of the 100 greatest movies of all time. These are the same people who decided that Lawrence of Arabia was an American film despite not having one single American in a position of genuine power in its cast or crew.

  • Citizen Kane topped the list last time.
  • It's hard to figure any movie of the past ten years will crack the new top ten.

Brokeback Mountain, Saving Private Ryan and Lord of the Rings should be the only 3 films to make the list, if for their influence if nothing else (though Brokeback is pretty universally and deservedly acclaimed as a masterpiece of filmmaking).

Tim, normally you have impeccable taste in movies, but Donnie Darko sucks. I'm sorry, there's no other way of saying it, but it's just pretentious rubbish. However, we agree that if Crash, LOTR, Gladioator, etc. make the list I will be peeved. As for additions, I would push for American Beauty, maybe Magnolia, maybe The Royal Tennenbaums, maybe one of Charlie Kaufman's movies, but that's about it. And I wouldn't put any of those in the top 30. But then again, I'd change half the original list...way too conservative in the critical sense.

I think I'll go vote for A Knight's Tale...

Yeah, I figured Lawrence must have a money connection through the studio. I still say it's a British film, though. BTW, did you know that Peter O'Toole only got the part because Albert Finney turned it down.

My god I hope not Lee! I hate those movies. The wicker man, the original is much better. Timothy, Great article. I hope you're right. The people voting for this should have a license for good taste because I'm afraid most of the movies will probably be drek. By the way, do you think maybe Ishtar has a chance to get on the list now that Warren Beatty got that award? That would be great!!!;) Bye

Oh, and I believe Lawrence of Arabia was distributed through US companies, and possibly financed (produced) the same way. As always, it's about the money...

I think the biggest reason I haven't directed yet is I fear Tim's sharp-tongued reviews... (disclaimer - I started directing a stop-motion Lord of the Rings when I was 14 years old...)

I think the new additions will be Daredevil, The Wicker Man (the remake of course), Along Came Polly, and The Land Before Time XI: Invasion of the Tinysauruses.
