How to Reuse Milk Jugs in Your Garden

Milk Jugs Anyone?

If your family goes through a lot of milk, take advantage of your surplus and use them in your gardening. You will be amazed at what you can do with milk jugs. I was actually amazed when I started to experiment.

To begin with, if you need a funnel, simply cut the jug in half, the top part of the jug becomes your funnel, you can use this to put dirt into a pot, it will help keep it from getting all over your work surface. You can also use the funnel to water your plants if you have certain plants
that need the water focused in a specific area, the funnel can help you do so.

Are you starting new plants and want to protect them from the elements? Cust off a section of the bottom, set the jug over the new plant. If it seems to be a warm day but you still want to protect the new plant, simply take the lid off the mouth of the jug, your plant can still get cool air circulating through the opening, then make sure you reseal it when the sun goes down for the evening.

Going away for a weekend? Punch several small holes in the bottom of a jug, make sure they are tiny ones so that the water will only trickle a little bit. Place several small rocks in the bottom to weigh down the jug, just in case there is some wind. Now fill the jug with water and place it close to the base of your plant. You are set to go. Your plant will get the proper amount of water it will need for the few days you are gone.

Do you want to start a compost bin? You can actually use a milk jug in your kitchen to place vegetable peels in. Just open the mouth, stick them down in and reseal the top. When you are ready to add them to your compost, simply add water into the jug, swish the water around and then pour out into your pile or bin. Rinse the jug and do it all over again. It's that easy.

Need a handy scoop. Using the same idea as the funnel, simply keep the lid on the mouth of the jug and you have a handy scoop. You can use it to scoop up soil, seeds or what ever you may need it for.
