The NFL's Longest Tenured Coaches
With the firing of Mike Shanahan in Denver and Mike Holmgren's retirement from the Seattle Seahawks, the list of the NFL's longest tenured coaches has been shaken up a bit. The departure of those two coaches leaves just 10 teams that have had the same coach for 5 or more seasons. And, there are only two coaches that have been with the same team since the 1990s.
Assuming no more will be fired, here is a list of the NFL coaches who have been with their teams the longest.
Jeff Fisher, Tennessee Titans, 1994 - Fisher was promoted from defensive coordinator with 6 weeks remaining. He was retained in 1995 and the team drafted Steve McNair as its quarterback of the future. He has won three division titles and one AFC Championship.
Andy Reid, Philadelphia Eagles, 1999 - Reid has won 5 division titles in 10 years as a coach. The Eagles didn't win a single division title in the 10 seasons prior to him coming to Philadelphia.
Bill Belichick, New England Patriots, 2000 - Belichick was also named head coach of the New York Jets the same year but turned it down one day later. His team missed the playoffs this year for the first time since 2003.
Jon Gruden, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 2002 - Gruden took his team to a Super Bowl title his first season. The team has missed the playoffs 4 of his last 6 seasons.
Tony Dungy, Indianapolis Colts, 2002 - Replaced by Gruden in Tampa Bay, Dungy has taken his Colts team to 5 division titles, one Super Bowl title and has not missed the playoffs once.
John Fox, Carolina Panthers, 2002 - Fox took over a team that had gone 1-15 in 2001. He took them to an NFC Championship by 2003 and won his second division title this season.
Marvin Lewis, Cincinnati Bengals, 2003 - The Bengals continue to keep Lewis despite a 46-49-1 record, just one winning season (in 2005) and a 0-1 playoff record.
Jack Del Rio, Jacksonville Jaguars, 2003 - Playing in the same division as Dungy's Colts, Del Rio has managed just three winning seasons, an 0-2 playoff record and managed to lose his punter for the 2003 season because of an axe he placed in the locker room.
