HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is no stranger to today's society. It's a virus that weakens the immune system. Eventually the virus progresses to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), which is often fatal to those who are diagnosed with it. It's this reason that makes it hard to believe that there are a number of men who are purposely trying to become HIV positive. However, there are reason's why men are trying to become infected with HIV.

Those who seek HIV are called "bug chasers" and like most people they want to be involved in something that separates them from the rest of humanity. A few find something special by becoming infected with HIV. Dr. Gerald Schoenewolf, Ph.D. says, "they want to feel accepted and a part of something"(1). Not everyone has the virus, which makes those who are positive different. They are also not alone. "They see those living with HIV as a cohesive group that welcomes its new members and receives vast support" (Freeman).

Chasing the bug can be exciting for some. Since most people would consider the chase as a bad idea it is stimulating to do "something that everyone else sees as crazy and wrong" (Freeman). When it's something you are not supposed to do, it is fun. "They are just turned on by the risk" (Caloz 1). However, seeking HIV is also exciting for some because it is a fetish. CBC news reporter Marie Caloz says that one person she interviewed was aroused by the idea and that he now only has sex with those who are HIV positive (3). It is similar to the same attractions of sado-masochistic activities. While those acts usually involve physical pain some are turned on by it. In this case they are turned on by a life-threatening illness.

The quoted Rolling Stone article (Freeman) has been resoundingly debunked as a load of horse manure. Of the two sources quoted by the author, one has denied involved and the other only spoke in anonymity. Bug chasing/gift giving is rare and most people in the gay community despise those few who engage in such risky activities as giving the rest a bad name.

Terrific article. And very sad. If you are so afraid of catching it, you need to examine why you keep doing it. As in "The thrill of the hunt". Is this your way of forcing your family or society to notice and accept you? That will only happen when you grow up, take control and do something meaningful with your life. Protect yourself, and that bright future you might want to have someday.

You know what, I think I start binge drinking 7 days/week, so I can develope sirios of the liver and not have to worry about getting it. I'll start smoking a carton a day as well, so I won't have to worry about lung cancer either.

How terribly sad. Unfortunately, I can't say I'm too surprised that now people are doing something like this. The state of our world, including its morals are reaching new lows, as the Bible says will happen. Good thing people can accept salvation, personal identity and freedom through Jesus Christ. I do hope also that people change their minds to not do this after reading this article and Linda's comment.

These men are not in reality. They do nor realize what is in store for them if they get it. They are prpbably generally healthy, and don't know what its like to feel sick, they haven't a clue as to the reality fo the situation. They don't realize how debilitating their life will become, because even if they don't get full blown aids, they are still sick, and any kind of chronic sickness that knocks your immune system and over-all well being into permanent distress is no walk in the park. They are definately foolish, irresponsible human beings, especially since, if they become infected, risk spreading the disease even more. I hope somebody reads this article and our comments on Associated Content and thinks it through REAL CAREFULLY
