The health and well-being of your brain should be considered important, regardless of your age. As we all know, it is possible to exercise our bodies, but did you know that we can also exercise our brains?

As people get older, mental abilities slowly decrease. It is widely believed that this decline in mental abilities is normal, and sooner or later, inevitable. So is that it? Can we do nothing about loosing what we have?

The fact of the matter is that according to recent research, we can prevent the decline or loss of our mental abilities by taking certain actions. Regardless of age, you can keep your mind in tip-top shape, and ejnoy all the perks involved, such as creativity, and memory capacity, just to name a few.

The two most widely discussed ways to support the brain, is through a healthy diet and regular mental activity. But the third, least publicized way is to literally get physical with the brain. The first two have been promoted for many years. However the third, which entails exercising the brain, is probably the most effective way to keep and maintain your mind.

The way to exercise the brain, is not by by practicing mental activities such as memory games, puzzles or number sequences, although these activities are important as well. One way that getting physical with your brain can be accomplished is through general physical exercise. The same type of exercise that we practice in order to keep our bodies in shape, also benefits our minds in the same way. As a matter of fact, physical exercise can fortify connections between neurons, and stimulate the growth of brain cells.

In addition to regular exercise, it is of course important to try and keep stress levels as low as possible. Stress can singlehandedly destroy the brain, as well as the body systems controlled by the brain. When someone is under stress, certain hormones are produced in the blood which repeatedly damage brain cells.

When oxygen and blood flow increases, the neurons are supported, enabling them to fire. When neurons fire, they connect with each other, and messages are transmitted to the brain, and from the brain.
