Normally, when people see sale or clearance signs, the urge to overspend and buy that sale item in multiple colors is overwhelming. The urge to splurge becomes even more overwhelming when someone goes into a discount superstore.

Places such as Wal-Mart or Target make it all too easy for someone to go in thinking all they need is the advertised toilet paper on sale through the next weekend, and come walking out with four or five other items (not on sale, but things the person thought were good deals). The urge to purchase more and not stick to only the things we need can be overwhelming when we are faced with items presented to us in bulk or at a discount price.

For this reason, learning how to deal with these urges and not overspend, is a good idea. After all, overspending at a discount store ends up defeating the purpose of discounts if you buy more than what you need.

A good way to discipline yourself is to create a list. Make a list of the items you need and stick to that list. If you see something you like that is not on the list, you can go as far as admiring it, but learn to exercise the self control to put that item back on the shelf and walk away.

This is of course easier said than done especially at stores like Costco. Costco, which many look at as a superstore of bulk food products has actually turned into a superstore of just about everything. Not only does Costco have foods and snacks in bulk, but the store also has popular fashions and electronics such as Ugg boots, Smashbox cosmetics, Seven jeans or iPods. Thus, the urge to purchase these products because we see them on sale is all too easy.

However, if these items are not on your list, do not put them in your shopping cart or basket.

Another tip to stop yourself from overspending is to carry cash. This tip works in conjunction with making a list. If you make a list, you know exactly what you need. Thus, you can estimate how much each product will cost and alot yourself the appropriate amount of money you will need for the shopping trip. This is a way to discipline yourself to budget your expenses.
